Manchester United defender Harry Amass has been left out of Ruben Amorim’s pre-season squad to face Leeds United following a huge decision on his club future.
Amass joined United in 2023 from Watford’s academy. He arrived as one of the most highly-rated young talents in his position across the country.
United warded off stiff competition to land him. He steadily rose through the ranks at Carrington and was selected by then-manager Erik ten Hag to join the senior squad for the pre-season tour ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
Amass impressed on tour, starring in friendlies against Real Betis and Liverpool. However, he was strangely not afforded minutes once the competitive season started.
It was not until Ten Hag was sacked and replaced by Ruben Amorim that Amass really got his big break. Amorim gave the defender his debut last March, bringing him on as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Leicester City.
The teenager finished 2024/25 with seven first-team appearances under his name, including four Premier League starts.
He also featured in both games of United’s post-season tour of Asia.
However, he will not be part of the contingent that takes on Leeds United in Stockholm on Saturday or the three-match trip to the United States, which Amorim and his players leave for on Tuesday.
According to the BBC’s Simon Stone, United have decided that Amass will go out on loan next season to further his development.
Stone explains, “The decision has been taken internally at United for Amass to try to get valuable experience by pushing to play first-team football every week, which would not have been the case had he remained at Old Trafford.”
“It is understood there has been plenty of interest in the England youth international but no deal is imminent.”
This has been corroborated by Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, who notes that Amass’ loan departure may push United to dip into the market for a left-sided option.
At the moment, Patrick Dorgu is United’s starting left-wing-back, with new signing Diego Leon likely to deputise him if the Paraguayan is deemed capable of continuing with the first team.
Luke Shaw can also play there but Amorim seems to prefer him as a left-sided central defender.
