Roy Keane and Ian Wright couldn’t believe the call that decided the FA Cup tie
Reaction to Harry Maguire's injury time winner for Manchester United against Leicester was unanimous on ITV's coverage of the FA Cup tie as Ian Wright and Roy Keane expressed shock towards the officiating.
The Man United defender rose highest to head home Bruno Fernandes' free-kick in the 93rd minute in what proved to be the last action of the game.
However, replays showed the central defender appeared to have strayed into an offside position just as the ball was struck. But with VAR not in use, the goal was allowed to stand.
It saw Leicester beaten with just seconds remaining of normal time and prompted a frustrated reaction from Ruud van Nistelrooy who said the decision was "hard to swallow": "We are not defeated in Fergie time, we are defeated in offside time," he told ITV.
"This wasn't necessary. VAR you have in a couple centimetres, a couple of inches, this was half a metre, clear in line. That was a hard one to take because the team deserves to draw in the end. Then extra time, stay in the game you, never know what happens.
"It was a very good team performance, started really well, pressing United. On the ball very stable. Deserved to go 1-0 up at half-time. Of course we know in the second half they're going to put some pressure on us and some chances but not even that much.
"We deserved to go into extra time, go for the battle in extra time and maybe penalties. Decisions like these in our level are hard to swallow."
Discussing the incident on ITV 1 with host Mark Pougatch, Wright said: "When you look at how far offside he is, that does not need VAR, the linesman is right in line with it. He's right to say it's not 'Fergie time', it's a really poor decision. That impacts him [Van Nistelrooy], that will impact his managerial career because it's another game that goes down as a loss."
Keane, who labelled it a "shocking decision" replied: "Sometimes they criticise the big clubs for getting the decisions for them and that's a great example of it. that was such a bad decision.
"We talk about United needing some luck [in the cup competitions] but you have got to get those big decisions right and that's a shocking mistake."
Then in response to Pougatch explaining VAR will not be in use in the FA Cup until round five, Wright said: "Look at that, that seems blatantly obvious for him to see even if there was no VAR, that's his job to see down there. Did he think it was there and think 'this will get sorted out?' He obviously knew VAR was not there, he's got to do his job there."
