Manchester United defender Harry Maguire shared an immediate fitness update following the 1-1 draw with West Ham on Tuesday evening.
Maguire was named in the starting XI by Michael Carrick for the fifth game in a row as United were held to a frustrating draw at the London Stadium by the Hammers.
United found it hard to break down West Ham’s low block, and things went from bad to worse shortly after the break when Tomas Soucek broke the deadlock.
West Ham retreated deeper and deeper, intent on protecting their slender lead. But with time running out, Benjamin Sesko applied a subtle, clever finish to Bryan Mbeumo’s inviting delivery, snatching a share of the spoils for the Red Devils and ensuring Carrick remains unbeaten.
Maguire was again a pillar of reliability, making several crucial interceptions and dominating his duels. One such challenge, which halted Crysencio Summerville, appeared to leave him nursing some discomfort.
At one point, the cameras spotted Maguire holding his hamstring. He was then taken off in the 68th minute and replaced by Leny Yoro.
There were fears that Maguire’s issue may have been serious, seeing as Carrick was forced to substitute him.
However, the defender allayed those fears as he left the stadium.
Asked about his hamstring in the mixed zone while he exited the London Stadium, Maguire said he’s “alright,” according to The Sun’s Katherine Walsh.
This has been corroborated by the Manchester Evening News, who note that the England international remarked, “Yeah, good.”
United fans will be waiting with bated breath for a clearer update on Maguire’s fitness, but it is encouraging that the defender himself appears unconcerned.
The Red Devils will not play this weekend, having crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle against Brighton and Hove Albion. Carrick and his players return to action on February 23 when they go away to Everton.
