According to Leeds Live, Leeds are set to sign Harry Wilson on a free, subject to a medical, a coup that could build momentum after Ethan Ampadu’s renewal.

Wilson agreed terms on deadline day last summer before Fulham pulled the plug, denying a move. Fulham offered fresh terms, but with his deal close to expiry they could not keep him tied down.

Other clubs were interested, with mentions of Champions League sides looking. How far that went is unknown, and they appear to have missed out to Leeds.

He would join Welsh team-mates Joe Rodon, Daniel James, Ampadu and Karl Darlow, who is in renewal talks. Academy duo Jayden Lienou and Charlie Crew have both been in the Wales senior squad, and Ampadu says he talks about Leeds when asked on international duty.

Playing time is central. At 29, this deal would cover the last of his peak years, and he said before Christmas he must be somewhere he will play regularly.

Leeds will guarantee him game time, which might not be on offer elsewhere. He is coming off 10 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League matches, and regular minutes would aid his Wales ambitions for a home European Championships in two years.

Ampadu may have weighed that up when renewing, and his commitment will have signalled intent to Wilson. If and when completed, a free Wilson deal would advertise ambition while preserving a squeezed budget, and fits the 49ers’ aim of raising the squad’s ceiling.
