The writing appears to be on the wall for Heidenheim, who are languishing at the bottom of the table after mustering 16 points from 28 league matches. With just six games left to play, they are 11 points adrift of safety and nine points away from the relegation playoff spot, leaving them in need of a miracle if they are to avoid the drop.
While they have gone 15 games without a win, Frank Schmidt’s side have avoided defeat in their last two Bundesliga outings. Heidenheim played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in their home clash with Bayer Leverkusen, before they picked up another point in last Saturday’s away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Patrick Mainka and Marnon Busch grabbed a goal apiece to give Heidenheim a 2-1 lead, before Gladbach’s Franck Honorat netted a 74th-minute equaliser to ensure the spoils were shared.
As a result of that draw, Heidenheim are still searching for their first win since beating Freiburg in December. Saturday’s hosts can certainly take confidence from the fact they have won four of their previous five matches against Union, including a 2-1 victory in November’s reverse fixture.
Mikkel Kaufmann has been ruled out after his substitute appearance against Gladbach was cut short due to injury. The hosts are also without the services of Leart Paçarada and Sirlord Conteh.
Predicted lineup: Ramaj; Busch, Mainka,Föhrenbach, Behrens; Dinkçi, Niehues, Dorsch, Ibrahimović; Pieringer, Zivzivadze
Union heads into the weekend in 10th spot after winning eight, drawing eight and losing 12 of their 28 league games this season. With seven points separating them from the bottom three, Union are on course to extend their top-flight stay into an eighth consecutive season.
While they look set to secure safety, Union will still be keen to produce a strong end to the season, especially as there is an opportunity to finish in the top half for the first time since clinching a top-four finish in the 2022-23 campaign. They will need to spark an upturn in fortunes if they are to achieve that objective, having won just one of their previous five Bundesliga matches. They did at least pick up a point in their most recent outing against St. Pauli, which saw Andrej Ilić score in the early stages of the second period to cancel out Mathias Pereira Lage’s first-half opener.
After playing out a 1-1 draw on home turf, Union will head on their travels with hopes of improving upon a poor run of form that has seen them lost four of their last five road trips. The visitors are searching for their first win over Heidenheim since claiming a 2-0 home victory in a DFB-Pokal tie in October 2022. Meanwhile, their last success at the Voith-Arena took place in October 2015, when they prevailed by a 2-0 scoreline in a 2. Bundesliga encounter.
Union will head into Saturday’s fixture without the services of David Preu and Matheo Raab.
Predicted lineup: Rønnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Leite; Haberer, Jeong, Khedira, Schäfer, Köhn; Burke, Ilić
