Jaden Umeh has received his first senior Republic of Ireland call-up for a training camp in Spain that includes a friendly against Grenada on 16 May, with Benfica granting his release despite the date falling outside the FIFA calendar.
According to Glorioso 1904, the Benfica winger will link up with Heimir Hallgrimsson’s squad in Murcia for the camp and the match.
Umeh joined Benfica two seasons ago from Cork City and has largely featured in the club’s youth sides. He was recently invited by José Mourinho to train with the first team, a sign of confidence in his potential.
Already capped at under-21 level, the young winger now steps into the senior group for the first time.
Hallgrimsson has praised his qualities and believes he has tremendous potential, while noting they do not yet know his ceiling. He said the staff are eager to work with him and assess whether he is ready for this level.
The squad gathering is marked by several debuts due to scheduling constraints. Umeh, who featured in the most recent junior Clássico, is the youngest in the group and is considered one for the future.
