We asked our Coventry City fan pundit what he thought about their links to Rob Holding
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Coventry City have been told to move for Rob Holding after it recently emerged that Frank Lampard's side were keen to sign the Crystal Palace defender on loan.
It was reported by The Sun that Lampard is keen to bring the 29-year-old to the CBS Arena, with the former Arsenal man yet to feature for Palace in the Premier League after completing a deadline day switch to Selhurst Park last summer.
Holding and Palace boss Oliver Glasner have reportedly fallen out so he's not in the first-team picture with the Eagles anymore, with his only football this season coming for their U21 side.
With seemingly no future at Palace, they'll be looking to move him on this month and Lampard is keen to bring him to the Midlands, much to the delight of our resident Sky Blues fan pundit.
We asked our Coventry City fan pundit, Ryan Murphy, what he thought about the prospect of Holding joining the Sky Blues, and it's clear that he feels it would be a good signing, despite his lack of recent football.
Speaking to Football League World, Ryan said: "Rob Holding would be a coup in my opinion.
“If he was playing regularly in the Premier League, then in my opinion, we wouldn’t be able to attract him, and he wouldn’t be coming to Coventry City, but these are the risks over loan signings, whether it be a young kid who you don’t know if they’ll be physical enough or if it’s someone like Rob Holding that hasn’t been playing who could be rusty.
“But a player of his experience and the level that he’s played at, he’s only 29, and he’s not injured, so he’s keeping himself fit. Although he might not be 100% match-fit to come down to the Championship, it would be a massive, massive signing.
“It comes with its risks, but as I say, all loan signings do and the reason he’d be coming to Coventry City because there is a risk and if he was playing regularly, he’d be a Premier League player playing regularly, but that’s someone we need to get and that sort of experience as he’s got a point to prove and will want to be playing football again.
“He’ll be hungry, and I’m 100% behind that signing. It would be a fantastic one for me.”
With 162 appearances for Arsenal, 98 of them coming in the Premier League, Holding possesses a wealth of experience and quality, and at 29 he's still got plenty to give.
Things haven't worked out at Palace, but that's nothing to do with his ability and is down to a clash with the manager so he should be hungry to prove a point at his new club should he leave in January.
It was only two years ago that Holding was playing for an Arsenal side that nearly won the Premier League title and it would be a real coup for Coventry to secure his signature next month.
As a legend of English football, Lampard has pulling power when it comes to signing players, as he showed at Derby during the 2018/19 campaign, and signing Holding would be a statement of intent that he means business at Coventry.
