FC Nantes owner Waldemar Kita considers that hiring Portuguese head coach Luis Castro was a glaring mistake, one that could lead Les Canaris straight to Ligue 2. Speaking to Eurosport, Kita has lamented his side’s awful Ligue 1 season with Nantes sitting second-to-last and five points adrift 16th-placed Auxerre.
Nantes are heading to the second-tier, and Kita believes it is sorely down to him taking a back seat in the club’s management. “We’re doing because I let everything slide.” The 72-year-old businessman adds that hiring Castro was the first step towards relegation.
“I shouldn’t have hired this inexperienced coach. I’ve said it time and again”, Kita says. “We’ve never hired a Ligue 2 coach. This guy is out of his depth; he’s a youth worker. He can’t succeed.”
Nantes parted ways with Castro when the club was in a precarious – but not yet desesperate – situation back in December. A couple of days after his dismissal, Castro joined La Liga relegation battlers Levante.
The Valencia-based outfit is second-to-last in the standings, although hope of survival remains with six games left to spare. Kita is adamant that Nantes’ former head coach will fail in his mission: “This coach will relegate two sides in a single season.“
