Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is set to complete a move to Celta Vigo, the reliable Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

Surplus to requirements

Bayindir has been unable to nail down a starting berth at United since joining the club from Fenerbahce three years ago.

He played second fiddle to Andre Onana despite the Cameroonian’s mistake-strewn spell at Old Trafford. At the start of last season, then-manager Ruben Amorim handed Bayindir a run of games, with Onana deemed surplus to requirements.

Bayindir failed to justify his selection, making multiple high-profile errors that cost the Red Devils dearly in games. This prompted United to dip into the market and sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Lammens enjoyed a sensational maiden campaign in England, showing himself to be a safe pair of hands that United had been missing for several years. He is now considered the undisputed number one. Bayindir came close to leaving in January amidst interest from Besiktas but United blocked an exit.

The signing of Karl Darlow as a free agent from Leeds United all but confirmed that there was no longer a place at United for Bayindir.

Besiktas were said to be keen on a summer deal, but it’s Vigo who have emerged in recent days as the strongest suitors for the Turkey international.

Now, Romano has revealed that an agreement is in place for Bayindir to seal an initial loan switch to the La Liga outfit.

According to Romano, “Celta Vigo have agreed deal with Man United to sign Altay Bayindir as new goalkeeper, here we go!”

“Understand it’s a loan move with €4m buy option, fee subject to changes based on appearances.”

“Bayindir, authorized to travel for medical and contract signing by Manchester United.”

It remains uncertain what performance-related conditions would activate a fee increase or the permanent purchase option. United, for their part, will be optimistic that Bayindir’s loan spell in Spain proves successful enough to secure a long-term transfer.
