Liverpool return to the Champions League this week with a sense of unfinished business. After starting the Premier League season with four wins from four, Arne Slot’s side now face Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at Anfield. The fixture carries an extra emotional weight, particularly for supporters who remember the heartbreak of 2020 when the Spanish side knocked Liverpool out at Anfield. Speaking on The Red Room for Anfield Index, Grizz Khan captured that feeling perfectly.
Grizz Khan admitted just how raw that defeat remains. “We’ve got a bit of payback against Atletico Madrid.” He recalled his frustration vividly. “I’ve never been angrier with a human being than I was with Adrian that night against Atletico, when they done a job on us.”
Liverpool had been dominant but wasteful. “We were magnificent in that game. We just couldn’t score our chances and they done us on the counter.” That side was widely considered Europe’s best at the time, a view Khan echoed. “We were the best team in Europe by far that year. We would’ve won the double! That hurts.”
The scars of that tie have not healed easily, and for many fans this meeting offers an opportunity to set things straight.
Diego Simeone continues to embody Atletico Madrid, his fiery presence provoking strong emotions. Khan summed it up neatly. “Simeone is one of those coaches that if he’s coaching your team then you absolutely love him, but when he’s against you it makes you want to slap him because he’s irritating!”
His approach has long divided opinion. While some question the tactical nuance, others point to his ability to extract every drop of commitment from his players. Khan acknowledged that balance. “I’m not sure about his tactical game but I think he’s a magnificent man-manager.”
Atletico’s pragmatism has frustrated Liverpool before, but Anfield’s atmosphere can tilt the balance if Slot’s men start fast and remain ruthless in front of goal.
Liverpool may have won their opening four league matches, yet performances have not always matched the results. Slot has found a way to keep momentum despite teething issues, a trait of successful managers. The clash with Atletico comes just before a Merseyside Derby, which adds an extra layer of intrigue.
As Khan pointed out, “Consdering we have the Merseyside Derby early on Saturday, it’ll be interesting to see how Slot approaches the lineup.” Rotation could be crucial, but Slot has already shown a willingness to trust his squad depth. Navigating both fixtures effectively would not only keep Liverpool on course in Europe but also maintain their strong domestic start.
This Champions League opener offers Liverpool the chance to show that Slot’s first season was no one-off. Winning the Premier League in his debut campaign set high expectations, and European nights will be judged by the same standards.
For supporters, the wounds inflicted by Atletico four years ago add an emotional undercurrent. As Grizz Khan reminded us, some defeats linger longer than others. Payback might be a strong word, but few could argue that Liverpool owe themselves a performance.
