Michael Olise has been one of the outstanding players at FC Bayern this season. The French attacking star is not only one of the record champions‘ top scorers, but is also causing a stir across Europe. However, for sporting director Christoph Freund it is clear that the 24-year-old is still far from reaching his full potential
In FC Bayern’s convincing 6-1 win over Atalanta Bergamo in the Champions League round of 16, Olise once again underlined his class. With two goals and an assist, the Frenchman was the outstanding player on the pitch. He also contributed an assist against Bayer Leverkusen, securing his 17th assist of the current Bundesliga season. The Frenchman thus achieved a historic figure: since detailed data recording began in the 2004/05 season, no player has ever collected so many assists after the first 26 match days
His style of play reminds many observers of Arjen Robben, who dominated the right side of Munich’s attack for years and shaped an entire era at the record champions
However, sporting director Christoph Freund reacted to the increasing Robben comparisons with restraint. He does not want to compare the two players directly. „I think it’s always difficult to compare players,“ Freund explained in an interview with Sky
At the same time, the Austrian made it clear how highly he rates the quality of his attacking player: „But Michael has simply been exceptional since he joined us.“

Freund is particularly impressed by the Frenchman’s consistency. Olise is one of the players who plays an important role in almost every game at Bayern. „He also plays every game, he is extremely consistent and he already has exceptional quality. It’s fun to have a player like that in the team,“ emphasized the sporting director
Olise’s left foot in particular regularly provides special moments. „His left foot and his curve are very, very impressive,“ Freund continued
Despite his strong performances, Freund is convinced that Olise can improve even further. The attacking player is working intensively on his development every day. „He’s also a hard worker. I don’t think he’s at his limit yet because he simply works really hard every day,“ said the Bayern boss
If the 24-year-old continues this development, he could finally join the ranks of the great Bayern wingers – and possibly even take on a similarly influential role as Arjen Robben once did
He has already overtaken the Dutchman in one respect: with his 17 Bundesliga assists, he has broken the record. Never has a player collected more assists than Olise. What is particularly remarkable is that he reached this milestone after just 26 matchdays. He is therefore likely to extend his record by a good deal.
