Manchester United are genuinely interested in Newcastle United’s up-and-coming left-back Lewis Hall.

The Red Devils are preparing themselves for what should be an eventful summer transfer campaign. They are already on the cusp of securing their first signing in Atalanta’s Ederson.

While the 26-year-old Brazilian will only be the first of several midfielders to land in Manchester, the club is also planning to address other departments, especially the left-back role.

Man Utd genuinely interested in Lewis Hall

This season, Luke Shaw impressively started in all of Man Utd’s 38 Premier League contests. However, the experienced full-back certainly cannot replicate this feat next term, especially following the club’s return to the Champions League.

Therefore, United have been pondering on their left-back options, with Hall considered amongst the most popular names on the shortlist.

The 21-year-old is a Chelsea youth product who has been playing his football at St.James Park since 2023. He initially arrived on loan, before sealing a £28 million permanent switch the following year.

The Slough native has now established himself as an important player for the Magpies, who have him under contract until June 2029. He has also earned four caps with the senior English national team.

In his latest appearance on the Stretford Paddock podcast, The Athletic’s Man Utd correspondent Laurie Whitwell confirmed that the Red Devils are indeed interested in the young full-back, whom he describes as a ‘really good’ player.

The journalist believes Hall could command a hefty transfer fee, potentially reaching £50 million, but Newcastle certainly cannot request a similar figure to Anthony Gordon, who is finalising a £70 million transfer to Barcelona.

Whitwell also notes that Gordon’s imminent move suggests that the Geordies are in a tough spot financially, and they could be forced to sacrifice some of their biggest assets and rejuvenate the squad to avoid FFP sanctions.

Why Hall would be the ideal signing for Man United

When it comes to recruiting players, Man Utd often find themselves forced to choose between youth and experience. Nevertheless, Hall arguably combines both.

The Englishman is only 21, but has already made 102 appearances for Newcastle, in addition to 12 with Chelsea’s first team. And the best part about him is that he’s all too familiar with the Premier League, so he shouldn’t find any trouble adjusting to his new surroundings.

That being said, it should be remembered that United only have around £250 million to spend this summer, and the majority of this transfer kitty will be consumed by the midfield revamp.

Therefore, it remains to be seen if INEOS are willing to spend £50 million or more on Hall, while more cost-efficient left-backs could become available on the market.
