Leeds United have a clear opening to sign Hidemasa Morita. A Bola reports he will not renew at Sporting and is a “certain departure” this summer, his deal up in June with Leeds the only club named.
The report also notes the Premier League remains his dream, and at 30 this is viewed as his final chance to make that step.
Leeds have tracked Morita for some time and tried to sign him last summer. After promotion to the Premier League they lined up a concrete bid for a midfielder Ruben Amorim “absolutely loves”.
Their interest has not faded. Crucially, they were previously negotiating for a contracted player, now it would be a free transfer with the player committed to leaving.
Morita has made 103 appearances for Sporting, scoring 10 goals. He has been a regular in a side that has won back to back Primeira Liga titles and the Taça de Portugal.
Before that he played 81 times for Kawasaki Frontale and 48 for Santa Clara.
He has 40 caps and six goals for Japan and has captained Sporting on occasion. It underlines experience and leadership.
Leeds have already done the groundwork, and Ao Tanaka has even said Morita is the better player.
