A shock new potential transfer destination has emerged for Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund as Benjamin Sesko closes in on a move to the club.
Earlier on Thursday, news broke that United had agreed a deal in principle with RB Leipzig to sign Sesko.
United have been embroiled in a hotly-contested battle with Newcastle for Sesko. The Magpies tabled at least two formal bids for the Slovenian, the most recent one of which valued him at €90m.
The Red Devils submitted a slightly reduced offer, but Sesko’s desire to join them over Newcastle ultimately secured them his signature.
Newcastle also offered Sesko significantly higher wages than United did.
Ruben Amorim’s side will fork out an initial £66.3m (€76.5m) and a further £7.37m (€8.5m) in performance-related add-ons for the 22-year-old.
As he finalises his switch to Old Trafford, the question on everyone’s mind is what the club will do with Hojlund, who is almost certainly guaranteed to fall down the pecking order.
According to Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook, United are keen on selling the Dane.
Jacobs and Crook note that United “now wish to offload” Hojlund following the imminent signing of Sesko.
United are prepared to sanction Hojlund’s sale at the £40m mark – £10m higher than a widely reported £30m number and £3m less than the forward’s book value.
Hojlund came up during talks between United and Leipzig for Sesko, but the 22-year-old made it clear that he was not interested in joining the Bundesliga outfit.
Jacobs and Crook note, “If Hojlund departs, his preference would be a return to Italy or to remain in the Premier League. Milan and Napoli both made enquiries earlier in the window.”
The report adds in a rather unexpected twist that the Saudi Pro League is another potential landing spot for Hojlund, although his stance on moving to the Gulf state remains unconfirmed.
