Matty Godden scored his first goal of the season in Charlton's 1-1 draw against Watford
Charlton Athletic took a step closer to ensuring their survival in the Championship with a draw against Watford on Monday.
Matt Godden put the visitors in front before Nestory Irankunda’s 74th minute strike ensured that the two teams shared the spoils.
The Addicks were unable to further open the gap to 22nd place Leicester City, who also drew in their clash against Sheffield Wednesday.
A late goal from Jordan Ayew saved the Foxes from becoming only the second team to lose to the Owls this season.
The gap between Leicester and Nathan Jones’ side is still eight points, with each of the bottom seven teams drawing during the Easter Monday round of fixtures.
But there are now just five games left for Charlton to be overhauled, giving them a little bit more breathing room in the relegation battle.

Godden bagged his first goal of the season when he came off the bench against Watford on Monday.
The forward posted on social media to outline his relief at finally finding the back of the net in what has been a difficult year in the Championship.
“Been waiting for that feeling for a long time,” he wrote, via Instagram.
Fellow Charlton forward Charlie Kelman issued a response, replying with a raising hands and heart emojis to celebrate the achievement.
Godden had to wait until January to make his first appearance of the campaign, with the striker bringing an injury into the season.
The 34-year-old was a key part of Jones’ side last year as they earned promotion to the Championship through the play-offs.
Godden contributed 18 goals and one assist from 41 appearances in League One, with the team earning a fourth place finish before beating Wycombe Wanderers and Leyton Orient in the play-offs.
Charlton are now 18th in the second division table, eight points clear of Leicester in 22nd.
The Addicks have their own fate in their own hands, with the team needing to reach the 57 point mark to guarantee their safety.
Jones’ side are winless in their last four league fixtures, with their last win coming against promotion-chasing Middlesbrough on 11 March.
However, the Foxes are winless over the same period, with the teams below Charlton failing to make the most of their form.
Next up for the London outfit is a home clash against Preston North End on 11 April in a 3pm kick-off.
It’s been a difficult season for Godden after he was so important in Charlton’s promotion success last year.
His game time has been limited even after coming back from injury, making just one start from his eight appearances.
But finding the back of the net again is a sign of his progress, and it could prove quite important for Charlton if it leads to a promising run of form to end the season.
The Addicks still need a few more points to get over the line in their quest to survive in the division, and having an extra source of goals could be a big difference-maker in these final games.
