Djeidi Gassama has enjoyed a positive start at Rangers since his summer move from Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a turbulent summer, with fans fearing for the future of the club under current owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Given their situation, sales were inevitable during the window, and the most high-profile departure saw Djeidi Gassama join Rangers.

That was a major setback for all connected to the Owls, as the speedy winger had become a firm favourite at Hillsborough due to his pace and dribbling ability, which made him a joy to watch at times.

But, the £2.2m offered by the Glasgow side was seen as acceptable, and Gassama made the move north of the border.

Djeidi Gassama enjoys positive start amid the chaos at Rangers

For Gassama, it has been a case of leaving one chaotic club for another, as plenty has gone on at Rangers in the past seven weeks since his arrival.

Firstly, Russell Martin, the man who brought him to the club, has come in for fierce criticism, with fans already calling for the ex-Southampton boss to leave after a poor start.

Rangers are without a win in the league, having drawn all four games, which includes a goalless game against bitter rivals Celtic last time out, which leaves Martin’s men six points behind the champions.

Meanwhile, they failed to reach the Champions League after an embarrassing 9-1 play-off defeat to Club Brugge on aggregate, although they have now dropped into the Europe League.

But, despite the struggles of the team, it’s fair to say that Gassama has done enough to show why Wednesday fans were so disappointed to lose the attacker.

The 21-year-old has already shown his quality, primarily in Europe, where he scored four goals in his opening four games against Panathinaikos and Plzen.

Even though he hasn’t registered a goal contribution in the league yet, there’s no doubt that Gassama has emerged as Rangers’ chief attacking threat with the way he carries the ball, and his willingness to take risks.

Djeidi Gassama will be missed at Sheffield Wednesday

Of course, it’s early days, but, unlike many of his teammates, Gassama has shown he can deal with the pressure of playing for a club the size of Rangers, and the expectation that comes with that.

There’s no doubt his time at Wednesday helped on that front, and it will be intriguing to see how his career plays out with Rangers, where there is a demand to win trophies on a regular basis.

As well as that, it’s worth stating just how young Gassama is, and, at 21, there will be a belief that he still has plenty of room to develop in the years to come, and he could become a key figure for Rangers in the long-term.

From Wednesday’s perspective, it’s a real shame that he won’t be able to fulfil that potential in Yorkshire, but most will be pleased for the player that he has settled quickly at Rangers.
