Leeds United have joined the race for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles amid interest from Everton, Man United, and Crystal Palace in his services.
Southampton's failure to secure an immediate return to the Premier League through the 2025/26 play-offs leaves the club facing a potentially difficult summer, which Premier League clubs like Leeds United could take advantage of.
With another season in the Championship ahead, interest in several of the standout Southampton performers is only likely to intensify, particularly after a campaign that saw a number of players enhance their reputations under Tonda Eckert's tutelage.
The likes of Caspar Jander, Finn Azaz, Leo Scienza, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis all enjoyed excellent seasons and could attract attention from clubs operating at a higher level. Retaining most or all of that core will be crucial if Saints are to mount another promotion push, but doing so may prove easier said than done.
Of all their key assets, though, Shea Charles could be the most vulnerable to an exit. With interest growing and just one year remaining on his contract, Southampton may face a major decision over whether to cash in now or risk losing him for a reduced fee further down the line.

Charles' Southampton future is uncertain amid his contract expiring in 2027. That is sure to have alerted clubs to his potential availability and attainability this summer, with the midfielder scoring some clutch goals over the course of the 2025/26 campaign.
Given his contract situation, Southampton are arguably on their "last chance" to sell Charles. The sheer volume of Premier League interest has been mounting too, with the Northern Irish star unlikely to remain at the club in the Championship.
Rangers, Man United, and Everton are all keen on Charles this summer, while Nottingham Forest have had eyes on the £20 million-rated Southampton ace. Other clubs are also looking at bargains from the second tier, with Crystal Palace keen on Charles and having signed numerous key players via that route in the last few years.
The 22-year-old is being looked at by Leeds United now, with the Whites said to be keen on the former Sheffield Wednesday loanee. Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reports they are keen to strengthen their midfield and that they are weighing up a move for the Northern Ireland international after Southampton were kicked out of the play-offs.
Leeds have secured Ethan Ampadu to a new contract recently and have played Anton Stach in a more advanced role under Daniel Farke, with the German arguably better deeper. However, Ilia Gruev is in the final year of his deal and Ao Tanaka and Sean Longstaff are the only other depth players beyond that in midfield.

Jones reports that "Charles suits their profile as they look to bring in younger, homegrown players who have greater re-sale value as well as the ability to improve their squad immediately."
From Leeds' perspective, a move for Charles would therefore make plenty of sense. Farke's side need players capable of contributing immediately in the Premier League, but they must also be mindful of long-term squad building and ways to become better in terms of financial sustainability. Charles ticks both boxes.
At 22, he is already a proven Championship performer with the technical quality to thrive and the physical attributes to succeed. The Southampton star's ability to operate as a holding midfielder, box-to-box, or even in defence as a central defender adds further value.
Crucially, as a young, homegrown player with significant development potential, he would also represent an asset whose value could increase over time, fitting perfectly with the recruitment profile outlined by Jones. The issue they face is the sheer volume of interest in his services this summer.
