The end of the 2025/26 Championship season is almost over, and for Sheffield United supporters, they will be keen to put this year to the back of their minds as quickly as possible.

Their season was over before it started, in truth, with the appointment of Ruben Selles going down as perhaps the worst in the club's history as Spaniard lost each of his six games in charge after overseeing a chaotic summer transfer window before being swiftly relieved of his duties.

Since Chris Wilder returned to the helm, the ship has certainly been steadied, though the Blades have fallen flat from pre-season expectations, having lost out in the play-off final last time around, and a mid-table finish now represents the most likely outcome for the club.

With parachute payments set to expire this summer, sales will need to be made at Bramall Lane to fund any potential incomings, as Brazilian-born Dutch midfielder Gus Hamer looks increasingly likely to leave the club in the coming months, though his next destination is still up for speculation.

Gus Hamer is set to be a man in demand this summer, with his current deal with Sheffield United set to enter its final 12 months at the end of the season, as the Blades could well look to cash in on him now rather than losing him for nothing later.

Despite speculation about a departure, Hamer has remained one of Sheffield United's most important players this year, with four goals and 12 assists in 34 Championship games thus far.

Leeds United have retained a long-term interest in Hamer over the years, with this summer presenting the Whites with their best chance of securing his services yet.

However, as per FootballInsider, it is understood that the "ship has sailed" for Leeds to make a concrete move for Hamer, with the Premier League survival hopefuls well-stocked in the middle of the park.

With Hamer due to turn 29 before the start of next season, concerns about his age are also rife from the Leeds camp, who may well believe that bringing the midfielder to Elland Road from Sheffield United this summer wouldn't be the correct move, as it may have been in years gone by.

According to Turkish media outlet Kuzey Ekspres last month, Trabzonspor were a side tracking his signature, whilst a return to the Netherlands has also been mooted, with PSV Eindhoven also monitoring the situation.

Former Coventry assistant manager, Mick Brown, has also revealed to FootballInsider that he expects the Sky Blues to be interested in their former player in the coming months, having made the move to Bramall Lane from the CBS Arena for around £15 million in the summer of 2023.

Hamer is set to attract heavy interest this summer, though whether one of those clubs will be Leeds remains to be seen, as their long-term interest in the Dutchman could well be over just as he becomes available.

After a disappointing campaign, it looks almost certain to be a turbulent summer at Bramall Lane, with Wilder likely eager to shape the Blades squad once again.

The Sheffield native did not have the chance to do so last summer following his dismissal after the play-off final defeat, though it looks likely to retain his place in the dugout heading into the next campaign.

Right-back Femi Seriki has attracted interest from Everton as recently as January, with Club Brugge having also approached the Blades over a potential move for Andre Brooks, whilst Tyrese Campbell looks set for a potential exit amid interest from Celtic and Rangers, too.

Hamer won't be the only exit from South Yorkshire, as Wilder is set to embark on a busy window at the club.

Where the Dutchman may go is up in the air as things stand, though it is looking increasingly likely it won't be Leeds, who, should they secure their Premier League status for another year, may look to aim higher than the Sheffield United star.
