The Hatters have had a disappointing League One season, but they won't be lacking support at Wembley for their big match against Stockport County.

Luton Town have had a disappointing season in League One, but the club's Wembley appearance in the Vertu Trophy final will see them backed by a huge following from Bedfordshire.

The 2025-26 season has been a slightly underwhelming one for Luton Town. Following the rush of two successive promotions and the disappointment of two successive relegations, there had been optimism before the start of the season that the club would be able to compete strongly in League One this season.

But this hasn't been the case. Luton have struggled to impose themselves upon the top half of the table this season. They've only spent a couple of weeks in the play-off places, and they were all the way back in August, when they won three of their first four games.

Since then, though, they've struggled for consistency, and although they remain only three points short of a play-off spot, being down in 10th place in the table means that there are a number of clubs that they'll have to out-perform over their final five matches, if they're to stand a chance of reclaiming a place back in the Championship come the end of this season.

None of this, however, means that the club's support has diminished, and their appearance in the Vertu Trophy final against Stockport County on the 12th April is an opportunity for manager Jack Wilshere to both pick up a piece of silverware and potentially give his team a boost ahead of those all-important final league fixtures.

Luton Town have sold over 30,000 tickets for their big day out at Wembley

Despite their underwhelming League season, Luton Town won't be without support at Wembley for their big match against Stockport County.

Luton Today reported two weeks ago that their ticket sales for the match had passed the 30,000 marker. The club had initially been given an allocation of 25,340, but this is expandable to 36,799 in total, and it seems likely that the club will sell out their allocation in full.

Many of these sales came early, with it having been reported as soon as the middle of March that ticket sales had passed the 25,000 mark. With Stockport having sold considerably fewer tickets - Wembley is a straightforward journey for Luton fans, but this can hardly be said to be the case for those travelling down from Stockport - the match might feel like a home one for Jack Wilshere's team.

The Vertu Trophy could mean more for Luton than simply picking up a piece of Wembley silverware

The Vertu Trophy may not be at the very top of club priority lists at the start of the season, but success does at least offer fans a big day out. Last year's final between Birmingham City and Peterborough United was attended by a crowd of 71,722.

But there is a warning for Jack Wilshere in plain sight from last year's final. Peterborough United won that match 2-0, despite the overwhelming majority of the crowd being Birmingham fans, demonstrating that bringing tens of thousands of fans to London for such a big match doesn't necessarily guarantee winning it.

The Vertu Trophy has offered Luton Town fans light relief from an otherwise disappointing league campaign. The club had been among the favourites for promotion at the start of the season, with Premier League parachute money still being received offering them a potential competitive advantage over other clubs in the division.

But this hasn't manifested into success on the pitch. It would be a stretch to describe Luton's 2025-26 as having been a bad season. They've only spent a couple of weeks in the bottom half of the table, and have not at any point been in danger of getting pulled into a battle to avoid a third successive relegation. Considering the level of expectation at Kenilworth Road at the start of the season, though, the team hasn't performed as many would have hoped.

This final offers not only a shot at redemption, but also a near-unique opportunity to rebuild some momentum ahead of those final few games. Luton may be down in 10th place in the table, but they remain only three points from a play-off place, and although this may seem like a remote shot, it's still within reach and the team will arrive at Wembley in good form, unbeaten in their last six league matches.

If Luton can get a positive result from Sunday's fixture, it could help the team to continue to build the head of steam that's been gathering over their last six matches. The 2025-26 season has been a disappointment for fans so far, but the chance of lifting a trophy at Wembley and still possibly grabbing a play-off place which could result in a return trip at the end of May means that it's far from over, just yet.
