The Championship play-offs are just four games away for most teams, with the occasion, quite simply, unmatched when it comes to drama and sheer unpredictability. The final is one of the biggest events in the English footballing calendar, with so much at stake.

It is a format that compresses an entire season’s worth of pressure into three games, where momentum can play a factor, while fine margins and players holding their nerve in big moments can often outweigh league position or perceived quality of squad or coach.

The games are often decided by one mistake, one moment of brilliance, or even a refereeing call that can swing the entire narrative. Clubs that have battled across 46 games suddenly find themselves in a high-stakes shootout, with the financial reward of Premier League football dangling just out of reach.

The Wembley final, in particular, carries a unique intensity. It is not just a game for players, managers and supporters alike. Instead, it is football at its most ruthless and exhilarating. Millwall and Middlesbrough have been amongst it for a while but Southampton have hit form which could make them favourites.

Promotion would mean a huge deal for all the clubs involved in the play-off race. Middlesbrough have not played Premier League football for nine years, while Millwall have never played a season at that level since its inception in 1992.

On the other hand, Southampton are eyeing an immediate return. However, financially it could be a massive benefit to these clubs in both the short and long-term. It could have a transformative effect on these sides, which is why there is so much at stake.

As a moment in time, the play-offs are arguably the greatest and most dramatic way to gain promotion. The final is an intense and memorable occasion, irrespective of the outcome. Fans will want to be there, but how many tickets are they allocated?

Per Sky Sports, both Sunderland and Sheffield United sold out their ticket allocation of 35,531 last year. Per the official Leeds United website, Leeds were allocated 35,796 tickets for the East End of Wembley Stadium 12 months earlier.

The BBC revealed Coventry City were allocated 36,237 tickets for the game against Luton Town in 2023. It means that Wembley's 90,000 capacity will comprise around 35,000–36,500 fans of the two sides that make it there. However, the remaining 20,000 seats are not empty.

The other 20,000 vacant seats are carefully distributed across a range of stakeholders beyond the two competing clubs. A significant portion goes to the EFL itself, which allocates tickets to sponsors, commercial partners, and corporate guests.

These are often tied to long-term business relationships that help fund the competition as a whole. There is also a large hospitality allocation, with premium seating and boxes sold as part of corporate packages. These are typically occupied by businesses, clients, and VIP attendees rather than traditional supporters.

The allocation for the play-offs compared to the FA Cup

On top of all of those stakeholders, additional tickets are reserved for media, broadcasters, and operational staff. There are others as well, with extra reserved for club officials, players’ families, and wider footballing figures.

The FA Cup final is not dissimilar, albeit Leeds United have been allocated 33,350 tickets within the West End of Wembley Stadium, with Chelsea likely to get the same at the other end.

Man City took just shy of 34,000 to the FA Cup final against Palace, meaning the Championship play-off final is likely to have slightly more for the two clubs involved in these two huge games which will be a week apart.

The EFL play-off finals will be on the weekend of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th, while the FA Cup final is set to be held on the 16th of May. Southampton, Middlesbrough, and Millwall
