As expected, there’s a noticeable gap in ticket sales for the League One play‑off final between Bolton Wanderers and Stockport County.

The two Greater Manchester sides meet on Sunday, May 24th at Wembley for a place in the Championship, with kick-off scheduled for 1pm.

In truth, for Stockport, being in a League One play-off final is just the latest chapter in what has been a huge rise from non-league.

When local businessman Mark Stott completed his takeover of the club in January 2020, he wanted Championship football within seven years - and they could do it even sooner this weekend.

Bolton Wanderers, meanwhile, have now spent five consecutive seasons in the third tier, the longest spell at this level in the club’s history.

But how many fans will be in attendance for each team? FLW takes a look below!

In County’s latest ticket update, the club revealed how many tickets Hatters’ fans have snapped up ahead of Wembley, but it's not close to their initial allocation of 22,000.

It read, "Over 13,000 of you have already secured your place at Wembley for Sunday's final against Bolton Wanderers, once again demonstrating your incredible backing ahead of what is shaping up to be the biggest game in a generation for County - with Championship football at stake.

"We may be outnumbered on the day, but we know we won't be outsung with the travelling Blue & White Army getting behind Chally and the team from the first whistle to the last."

Bolton posted to their Instagram, "28,000 and counting behind us in the capital! 📈✊ Still time to secure your seat at the home of English football and roar on Schumacher's Whites."

That figure alone surpasses the aforementioned 22,000-ticket allocation handed to Stockport, but for a club that was playing in the sixth tier not so long ago, 13k plus is still a very impressive backing.

With these updated sales in mind, the estimated difference in attendance between the two clubs is expected to be in the region of 15,000 fans.

Stockport County will look to block out 28,000-strong Bolton Wanderers noise

As Sky Sports notes, Bolton have averaged crowds of over 21,000 for three consecutive seasons, so that makes their current 28,000-strong following at Wembley all the more understandable.

But after the two previous play-off campaigns for them have ended in heartbreak, Stockport will be looking to spoil the party once more. The Whites fell short against Barnsley in the 22/23 semis, then lost the 2023/24 final to Oxford United.

Also, no matter how big the difference in attendance may be, the overall combined number of fans won't be anywhere near as low as the 2018 League One play-off final between Rotherham United and Shrewsbury, which was only 26,218.

If you’re still looking to buy tickets for this match, Stockport mentioned further down in their update that tickets “will be taken off sale at 2pm on Saturday 23rd May" - and you won’t be able to purchase them on the day.
