Football League World takes a look at how former QPR striker Michael Frey is faring with Swiss side Grasshopper after his Loftus Road exit

QPR kept incomings to a relative minimum while sanctioning a host of outgoings in the January transfer window, with Julien Stephan eager to trim the deadwood from the squad at his disposal and grant fresh opportunities elsewhere for those who found themselves on the periphery at Loftus Road.

The Hoops made just two additions in the form of Justin Obikwu from Coventry City and the returning Ronnie Edwards, who had struggled for regular minutes with Southampton but enjoyed a stunning loan spell in West London during the second-half of the previous campaign and has now signed on a permanent basis.

A number of players left the club throughout January, though, with Murphy Cooper and Elijah Dixon-Bonner both sealing fresh loan switches away from the R's while Sam Field, Alfie Lloyd and Liam Morrison all departed on a temporary basis, too.

Few QPR supporters can have too many complaints about the nature of the Hoops' January business in terms of departures, even if a few more additions may have been necessary in order to strengthen Stephan's ever-fading ambitions of competing for a top-six spot.

The only permanent exit was that of Michael Frey, who departed after two years to return to Switzerland with top-flight outfit Grasshopper. Frey joined QPR in January 2024 from Royal Antwerp and returned 10 goals from 53 appearances, having found himself on the fringes in the first-half of the current campaign following a haul of eight Championship strikes last time out.

The 31-year-old often divided opinion among the QPR faithful, many of whom will be interested in keeping an eye on his developments back home in Switzerland.

With that in mind, then, Football League World has taken a close look at how Frey is getting on following his departure from QPR.

Despite only starting two league matches for QPR under Stephan this term prior to his exit, Frey was clearly match-ready upon arriving at the Stadion Letzigrund and has started each of his four appearances to date.

Three of those have come in league action in what has been a disappointing season for Grasshopper, who find themselves second-from-bottom at this moment in time, while Frey has also made one appearance in the side's ongoing domestic cup run.

Frey is yet to get off the mark for goals or assists in the Super League, though his previous goalscoring record in Switzerland with both Young Boys and FC Zurich suggests that may only be a matter of time.

The powerful forward has opened his account for Grasshopper, though, having struck a dramatic 93rd-minute equaliser in their eventual 4-3 quarter final cup victory over FC Sion to take the game to extra time before Bayern Munich loanee Jonathan Asp provided the winning strike.

Grasshopper now have seven games remaining of the league campaign, and Frey will be hoping to make his mark in the closing stages.

Michael Frey has been active on social media after QPR exit

Frey has also been active on social media following his arrival in Zurich, which will go some way to building a connection with a new fanbase.

After making his debut in a 1-1 home draw with Lugano on January 31, Frey wrote on Instagram: "Happy and proud to be here @gczurich 🔵⚪️ Important point after a combat performance💪🏼 Proud of the team! #immerwiiterallizäme."

Naturally, of course, Frey was delighted in the wake of Grasshopper's aforementioned cup victory in only his second appearance for his new side, which left the frontman to write: "Awesome Cup Fight !! ⚔️🔵⚪️ @gczurich Semi-finals here we come💪🏼 #allizämeimmerwiiter."

As captured above, Frey shared his first goal for Grasshopper via Instagram and received praise from two former Hoops teammates in Daniel Bennie and Isaac Hayden, who were both clearly delighted to see their ex-colleague kicking on in his new chapter.

In Frey's most recent post, he wrote: "Another Comeback🔵⚪️ An important point on the way!! Thanks for the great support🙏🏼 Hopp GC @gczurich💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 #immerwiiter."

Despite Grasshopper's struggles and Frey's own inability to open his account in league action to date, the Swiss forward is evidently enjoying his time with the side so far and that is clearly pleasing many back at QPR, too.
