Lorent Tolaj just edges Bali Mumba in the estimated wage ranks at Plymouth Argyle

It's been a truly difficult opening to the 2025/26 campaign for Plymouth Argyle, but their signing of Lorent Tolaj may end up being one of the best signings of the summer transfer window in League One.

Tolaj seems to be improving year upon year as he moves up the divisions.

From tearing up the National League with Aldershot Town, to then being the main source of attacking quality in League Two with Port Vale, a lot of people had the Swiss striker to once again make an impact, this time in the third tier.

It was looking likely that he'd be able to showcase that at Vale Park, playing in Vale's first four games of the League One campaign.

But after missing out on Rumarn Burrell and Dale Taylor, Plymouth were becoming desperate in their search to fill the void left up top by the summer departures of Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu, and triggered the £1.2 million release clause in Tolaj's contract to bring him to Home Park in the final week of the window.

Desperate times called for desperate measures, and after spending a seven-figure fee to bring Tolaj in, Plymouth were quick to ensure that they made him one of their highest-paid players, too.

According to Salary Sports' estimated wage ranks, Bali Mumba was Argyle's highest-paid player, on £8,500 per week. That was, until Tolaj joined late in the summer window.

The 24-year-old is said to be earning £9,000 per week at Home Park.

Mumba's position atop the club rankings was well-earned, as the former Sunderland and Norwich City youngster was a big part of Argyle's climb into the Championship, and then played 43 games in both of their seasons in the second tier.

However, Tolaj was brought in as the club's marquee signing and was given an estimated wage which clearly reflects that, and he's done a good job in repaying that to the fans.

The former Vale striker is already in double digits for goals across all competitions for the Pilgrims, and there's an expectation that he won't stop there in the second half of the campaign.

There is no doubt that Tolaj has been a bright spark in what has been a dull return to League One for Plymouth.

The Swiss frontman has been a focal point for Tom Cleverley's side, and for the most part, if opposition sides have been able to nulify the threat that Tolaj poses, they've been able to easily stroll to victory against the former Championship outfit this season.

For the second half of the campaign, the focus will be to ensure that the 24-year-old has the support needed as Plymouth battles against relegation, as the Pilgrims have lived and died on his performances a lot throughout the campaign.

Ultimately, it's a team game, and the quality of Tolaj hasn't been enough to drag them up the table. What it has done, though, is give Tom Cleverley's side a base to build on, and his goals will give them a chance to have a positive second half of the season.

There's no doubt that the 24-year-old is Plymouth's most important player, and it's not a surprise that he's the estimated highest earner at Home Park.
