Cardiff City recently beat Wrexham to progress into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Cardiff City recently progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Welsh rivals Wrexham 2-1 in a stunning final-16 showdown at the StoK Cae Ras.
The Bluebirds entered a period of uncertainty following relegation to League One last season, the first time they operated out of the division since its inception.
Brian Barry-Murphy was appointed as the man to lead the Welsh outfit back up to the Championship, marking his first job as a first-team boss in four years.
The Bluebirds have looked competitive from the outset this term, and find themselves just two points behind league leaders Stockport County after 13 matches with a game in hand.
Alongside this strong form in the league, Cardiff have managed to operate competitively in the Carabao Cup too. Wins over Swindon Town and Cheltenham Town moved them into the third round, where Barry-Murphy’s side dispatched Premier League side Burnley away from home.
Next came an all-Welsh tie with Wrexham, a contest which saw the Bluebirds defeat opposition in a higher division again and saw them progress into the quarter-finals of the cup in sweet fashion, given the differing trajectories those two sides have experienced in recent times.

Cardiff had already managed to accumulate a solid amount of money for reaching the fourth round of the competition, picking up £22,000 as a result.
Victory over Wrexham has secured the Bluebirds another £15,000 on top of that, taking their total earned up to £37,000 for this season’s competition.
If they were to progress into the semi-finals, they would pick up £50,000, both for reaching that stage and then subsequently competing in the two-legged affair.
A repetition of Cardiff’s 2012 heroics would see them reach the final at Wembley and take home another £50,000, with £100,000 on the line for whoever manages to claim the prize.

Cardiff City will be overjoyed at the fact they have progressed through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, but it will be incredibly difficult to make it much further in the competition.
Both Grimsby Town and Wycombe Wanderers exited the cup in the fourth round, which means that the likelihood of facing Premier League opposition next has increased massively. The only other non-Premier League outfit still in the cup, at this moment in time, is none other than bitter rivals Swansea City, who host Pep Guardiola's Manchester City this evening.
With powerhouses such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City among numerous other top-flight outfits still vying to lift the EFL Cup, it seems unlikely for Cardiff to reach the semi-finals.
However, Coventry City showed in 2024 that the possibility of taking on English football’s elite is still there for clubs in the EFL, and there is always a chance that Cardiff could be the latest lower-league side to go on a famous cup run. It's certainly not impossible, but regardless of where Cardiff's cup journey finishes, it's been a remarkable run from the Welsh capital side.
