Barcelona will not be back at Camp Nou this weekend as they take on Valencia at the Estadi Johan Cruyff on Sunday night. La Liga have now approved the venue with the relevant modifications for VAR and goal-line technology, with the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys unavailable due to a Post Malone concert on the Friday of that weekend.

Outside of that, the Blaugrana have reserved the use of Montjuic until February, but the occurrence of the La Merced festival means that the Council are keen not to cede the use of Montjuic for the last weekend of September, when the Blaugrana are due to host Real Sociedad, due to the number of people congregating in the area, and the necessary police presence.

Second game to be held at Estadi Johan Cruyff

As per Sport, the most likely scenario is that Barcelona’s following home game against Getafe on the 21st of September takes place at the Estadi Johan Cruyff too, following further delays to work on Camp Nou. Barcelona are then hoping to have Camp Nou ready for the visit of the Txuri-Urdin on the 28th of September, and then have that available for their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain at the start of October.

Barcelona losing out on millions due to delays

The 6,000 capacity of the Johan Cruyff clearly has an impact on their revenue, despite the high prices they are charging. The Catalan paper note that at Montjuic last season, the average matchday revenue was around the €2.8m mark, whereas the income from their game against Valencia is estimated at €370k. A difference of €2.43m, it is not clear exactly how much they will be making from the initial opening of Camp Nou with 27,000 fans – midway between the average 45,000 fans at Montjuic last season and the 6,000 at the Johan Cruyff.

However compared to what they would have earned at the Lluis Companys, these two games will cost Barcelona €4.86m. Given the rather alarming payment terms for their Camp Nou renovation loans, and the costs associated with not returning to Camp Nou earlier, each week away from it is a bitter blow for Barcelona.
