Arsenal have secured a place in the Champions League last 16 after finishing third in the League Phase standings, a result that not only boosts their European ambitions but also strengthens their financial position.

The Gunners have earned £7.8 million for securing a top-eight finish, along with an additional £1.8 million for their latest victory against Girona, bringing their total tournament earnings to £9.6 million so far. To compare, qualifying in the Europa League earns under £500,000 while the winners of that competition ‘only’ get around £7m. The winner of the Champions League receives £21m.

The benefits of finishing third don’t end there. Advancing directly to the knockout rounds means Arsenal avoid the two-legged play-off round, which takes place between February 11-19, allowing them to focus on a trip to Dubai while awaiting the round-of-16 draw on February 21.

Their next opponent will be one of AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, or Juventus, with the knockout stage beginning in March.

On the pitch, Ethan Nwaneri stole the headlines once again, scoring a stunning long-range goal to help seal victory over Girona. Jorginho converted a penalty after Thomas Partey was fouled, cancelling out Arnaut Danjuma’s opener. However, Raheem Sterling‘s late penalty miss continued his struggles in front of goal.

While Mikel Arteta’s side now turn their attention to Manchester City, their earnings from this Champions League campaign could help fund their transfer market activity, particularly after their £60 million bid for Ollie Watkins was rejected by Aston Villa. A second bid is expected.

With the financial boost from their European run, Arsenal may yet strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes.
