The Republic of Ireland international made the switch between Championship clubs this summer

Ipswich Town had a busy summer transfer window, with 11 players coming in through the doors at Portman Road.

One of whom made the switch from a fellow recently relegated Premier League side, as Kasey McAteer joined from Leicester City for a reported £12 million.

It was an eyebrow-raising move at the time, as the Republic of Ireland international hadn't been a fully-fledged starter for the Foxes, despite the fee perhaps resembling someone who would be.

McAteer started just nine games last season for Leicester, with his sole goal coming against his new employers in a 2-0 win in May, when both sides were already confirmed to be relegated.

The 23-year-old had made bench appearances in both of the opening two Championship games and was clearly behind Abdul Fatawu in the right-wing pecking order at the King Power Stadium.

Therefore, a move to Portman Road for an eight-figure fee would indicate a change in squad role and a potential wage hike. McAteer has received more money at his new club per week, but how much?

According to Capology's estimates, McAteer's new four-year deal at Ipswich sees him earn £20,000 per week, a figure which is set to stay the same throughout the duration of the contract.

In terms of where this ranks compared to the rest of his new teammates, McAteer is around the middle of the pack. Fellow new signing Marcelino Nunez is estimated to earn £22,5000 per week, and the likes of Leif Davis, Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves, three players almost guaranteed to start, are said to be on £25,000 per week.

£20,000 is a £5,000 per week wage hike on what the 23-year-old was earning at Leicester. The academy graduate, who signed a four-year deal in August 2024, earned an estimated £15,000 per week last season at the King Power Stadium.

It's worth noting that compared to Ipswich, Leicester's wage bill is a lot larger, given the recent history of both sides, with one competing in League One whilst the other was battling in European competitions.

Therefore, £15,000 on a team whose highest earner made an estimated £140,000 per week last season is less of a percentage than £20,000 on a team whose highest earner earns an estimated £35,000 per week.

The wage hike could, for some, seem minimal, but a £20,000 per week contract at Ipswich reflects one of their regular starting players.

Kieran McKenna looks to be a big fan of Kasey McAteer

Simply put, Kieran McKenna hasn't signed McAteer on a four-year deal worth an estimated £20,000 per week just to sit on his bench - the Ipswich manager does seem to be a fan of the Republic of Ireland international.

After making his debut from the bench in their 1-0 loss against Preston North End, the 23-year-old started games against Derby County, Sheffield United, and then the abandoned Blackburn Rovers game.

McAteer is currently keeping the likes of Jack Clarke and Sammie Szmodics, who scored a combined 42 goals the last time they were in the Championship, out of the side, so there's clearly talent in there which the Ipswich boss favours.

In a supporting role, the 23-year-old bagged six goals in 23 Championship games en route to the title for Leicester in the 2023/24 campaign. Now, two seasons on, he'll be looking to better that in a more prominent role.
