How Rochdale and York stole the Premier League’s thunder with a title decider for the ages

There is arguably no harder feat in English football than navigating your way to the sole automatic promotion spot that earns Football League status. Huddling around a phone after the final whistle of an emphatic win over Yeovil Town, York City’s players were getting ready to celebrate this seismic triumph. They really should’ve known better.

At Sutton United, it was 97 minutes. Against Wealdstone, it was 90 minutes. Away to already-relegated Braintree Town, having conceded a 91st minute equaliser, title-chasing Rochdale once again required last-gasp heroics to keep their hopes of automatic promotion from the National League alive. That they did through top scorer Emmanuel Dieseruvwe - or as he’s colloquially known “Mani D” - as the clock struck 99 minutes.

Unadulterated Rochdale limbs ensued in another sketchy, uncovered standing-only away end, while a familiar wave of frustration, dejection and disbelief took over the York players. It would go to the final day, and the highest-stakes final day in non-league memory at that. Because with two points separating them, Rochdale end their season hosting York for a place in the Football League.

For those just joining us, Dale’s recent penchant for a late show makes out like they are hanging onto this promotion race by a thread. That shouldn’t be the case. They are centurions on 105 points; leaders York are too, on 107 points.

Both have passed a barrier that should comfortably guarantee a spot in League Two. Barnet went up last year with a tally of 102, six points ahead of second place. The year before that, Chesterfield earned promotion on 98, 10 points clear of their closest challengers.

Akin to Wrexham and Notts County in 2022/23, these two sides have felt light-years ahead of the chasing pack all season, but thanks to an outdated structure, only one is guaranteed automatic promotion. That is despite the minimal gap between the fifth and fourth tiers’ elite teams; in only the last three years, Stockport and now Bromley have all gone to League One within two seasons of moving up from non-league, while Wrexham of course went back-to-back(-to-back).

There are calls for drastic change. In 2025, the National League launched its 3UP campaign, which aims to secure a third promotion spot, a cause that is supported by all 72 of its clubs - including the North and South divisions - along with the Football Supporters’ Association. But that change won’t come before the weekend.

The perilous reality for both heading to Spotland is that one will have to fight through the National League play-offs - something only six second-placed teams, out of 23, have found joy in since the system was initially revamped to add a second promotion spot at the end of 2002/03.

Considering their run of late winners, Rochdale should be counting their blessings that this clash of first and second still has everything to play for. But Jim McNulty’s side will also rue the fact they’ve allowed this title race to slip deep into “squeaky bum time”.

They threatened to become the league’s runaway leaders in mid-season, even if the table didn’t completely reflect that points-wise. In January, Dale sat a point off York at the top but with a hefty three games in hand; that number was four on some of their other then-promotion rivals like Carlisle and Forest Green. This was down to the club being plagued by their own pitch in a season which saw four home matches postponed and another, against Southend, abandoned 13 minutes before full-time due to a waterlogged pitch.

Rochdale were forced into a mid-season pitch overhaul to install new drainage, relocating two of their scheduled home games in December and January to Accrington Stanley’s Wham Stadium. One of those planned outings, against Brackley Town, was postponed due to a frozen pitch; beyond Spotland, their curse continued.

They could’ve taken full control of the title race with those games in hand, but failed to do so. At the same time, York had turned relentless.

The Minstermen have dropped just seven points from a possible 63 since the New Year and have their formidable scoring form to thank. Golden boot winner-in-waiting Ollie Pearce has led the way all season and goes into the final day with 34 goals, while Josh Stones and former Dale midfielder Alex Newby have both chipped in with double digits. Rochdale will be grateful this race isn’t going to goal difference; theirs is 26 shy of York’s.

That isn’t to say Dale have been struggling for goals - Dieseruvwe is the league’s third top scorer with 25, and that’s with injury struggles. But at the other end, there’s been another Rochdale shining light, one they will have felt lucky to have this term.

Manchester City starlet Ollie Whatmuff, 18, has been a standout on loan in between the sticks. On 18 clean sheets, he’s only one behind York’s Harrison Male in the race for the golden glove, but that’s with eight games less due to call-ups to the England Under-19 setup. The teenager is destined for much bigger things than the fifth tier and Rochdale will fear how they might fare without Whatmuff - and potentially Dieseruvwe - if they end up staying in the National League for next season.

Another emotional farewell is also on the cards for the hosts. All-time club record goalscorer Ian Henderson surprised everyone with a one-year extension at the age of 40 last summer, but is now surely set to finally hang up his boots. Three of his last four goals have come in crucial one-goal victories across the past month. For a combined 11 years across two stints, he has so often made the difference for Dale; promotion would be the fitting goodbye.

Such is the occasion, there was a desperation to secure tickets inside Rochdale’s 10,249-capacity stadium. York fans, who regularly pack out their LNER Community Stadium to an extent rarely seen at this level, camped out overnight to be among the mere 1,500 travelling across the Pennines. They made a request to increase their allocation, but club sources told The Independent that was rejected by Rochdale due to police concerns.

Rochdale, meanwhile, have struggled to sell out Spotland all season despite their success. It’s why, on the face of things, the neutral may favour York in this clash, purely based on footballing culture. Fearing that York fans may end up in the home end, the club made it so that only fans who have bought a home ticket this season were eligible to purchase for this game. Whether visiting supporters have found a workaround remains to be seen, but what we do know is that the ground will be full on the final day.

After nine months and 45 matchdays, everything rides on this. Rochdale had spent 102 years in the Football League before their relegation three seasons ago, while York had to fight back from the National League North to be within 90 minutes of a return to League Two for the first time in a decade. The back pages will lead with the goings-on of the Premier League, likely on the latest twist to Arsenal’s title push, but the football purists should have their eyes firmly pointed at Greater Manchester.

This is where the real cinema will happen. One will go up, and there is no guarantee that the other will follow come Wembley in a month’s time.
