The midfielder has been unable to make it as a part of Pep Guardiola’s first team plans since moving to the Etihad from Leeds United.

He has previously spent time on loan with the likes of West Ham and Ipswich Town, but he’s suffered from a lack of consistent minutes, as well as injury issues.

Phillips moved to Bramall Lane in the winter market on loan to the end of the campaign, but the club have been unable to sustain a promotion push under Chris Wilder.

The Blades will now be planning for the upcoming summer transfer window, with their sights set on competing for a place in the top flight.

A decision will need to be made on Phillips’ future ahead of his return to Man City, where he is likely to remain out of the first team picture.

Why Sheffield United want to keep Kalvin Phillips

It has been reported by The Star that Sheffield United are keen to keep Phillips for next season, even though he’s been limited to just three appearances since joining in early February.

It’s understood that staff at Bramall Lane have been very impressed by the midfielder’s attitude, which has made them keen for him to stay for next season.

The 30-year-old’s experience is seen as a valuable asset, and it’s believed that younger stars like Ollie Arblaster and Sydie Peck are both gaining a lot from him being around.

Phillips still has a contract with Man City until June 2028, but it’s been reported that he is keen to remain with the Yorkshire outfit beyond this loan spell.

It remains to be seen whether a permanent deal can be struck with the Premier League side, or perhaps another loan move could be on the cards.

The former Leeds star was once a starter for England, and he was in Gareth Southgate’s team as they reached the final of Euro 2020 five years ago.

But his career has been plagued by injury issues since making the switch to Man City in 2022 in a deal worth £42 million.

Sheffield United are currently 17th in the Championship table, 14 points adrift of the top six with only four games left.

Next up for Wilder’s side is a trip to face Watford on 18 April in a 3pm kick-off.

Kalvin Phillips can be a valuable addition to Sheffield United

Phillips isn’t the player he once was, and injuries are still hampering his ability to play every week, but he can still be a very valuable presence for Sheffield United.

His experience can help Arblaster and Peck improve and develop as players, and he will be a great leader to have in the dressing room.

Of course any move should also depend on the cost, but the Blades have some leverage and if they can strike an effective deal then it would make a lot of sense to keep him.

And it’s possible that a pre-season under Wilder could help him be ready for a full campaign next year, so there’s every reason to risk pursuing a move to sign Phillips again in the summer.
