Three Lions face tricky test with semi-final berth on the line

England face Norway this evening in a bid to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since they won the lot in 1966.

The Three Lions kicked their campaign into life in the last-16, overcoming Mexico with a dramatic 3-2 win at the Estadio Azteca.

Jude Bellingham’s quickfire first-half brace preceded a Harry Kane penalty which ultimately proved the winner, despite Raul Jimenez reducing Mexico’s deficit to one with a second-half spot kick, setting up a nervous final 20 minutes.

But England overcame an extended onslaught, thanks in part to heroic defensive substitutes Dan Burn and Djed Spence, and must now face Erling Haaland’s Norway as they look to book a place in the semi-finals, where they could face either Argentina or Switzerland.

Norway themselves are at the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998 and have put in a hugely impressive performance, cruising through qualifying before beating the Ivory Coast in the last-32 and stunning Brazil with a 2-1 win in the last-16.

Haaland has unsurprisingly been their talisman at the tournament, bagging seven goals in four appearances.
