The quest to end the winless streak in Major League Soccer will have to wait when New York City FC plays in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup. The Pigeons will have a chance to continue in the tournament, but the upcoming match will be much more difficult compared to the one against Westchester SC. This time, the Bronx side will be on the road to face their main rival, the New York Red Bulls. It will be a Hudson River Derby, but in the Open Cup.
The last time the two teams faced off in the tournament was back in 2022. The red team had the upper hand and knocked NYCFC out in the quarterfinals. Now, the Boys in Blue have won the last two meetings, sweeping the regular season series in 2025. They were slightly stronger compared to the New Jersey team, but at this time, both have 3-4-3 records.
Meanwhile, like NYCFC, RBNY is in the middle of their own winless streak in MLS, going 0-2-2 in four matches. Hence, both teams are entering the game not at their best. The Pigeons really could use the win to hopefully spark a positive streak in the regular season. Whether that will happen is questionable, especially since their confidence might be very low.
Still, this could easily be a competitive fixture. The constant want to win the derby and the need for some positivity might be the mental mix that NYCFC needs to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

Supporters can watch the match at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
If NYCFC fans cannot watch or listen to the game, then they can follow along via MLS Soccer’s timeline and NYCFC’s X account. Additionally, the club will post updates here and there on Facebook.
One will assume that Pascal Jansen will rotate his team after barely doing so for last week’s midweek match. At the same time, since NYCFC is playing the Red Bulls, the head coach will need to start more of his regular starters compared to the Westchester win. It would be good to see someone like Jonathan Shore start, for fans know he can keep up with MLS teams.
