So far, NJ/NY Gotham FC has had an okay start to the 2026 NWSL season. They won on the road against Boston Legacy FC, but shared the points with the North Carolina Courage over the weekend in the home opener. It is not terrible, but a 0-0 draw at home is not ideal. That is why the Bats must figure it out quickly as they welcome Denver Summit FC for a midweek game.
This will be the first meeting between the two clubs, and Gotham FC’s second battle against an expansion side in three matches. Like Boston, Juan Carlos Amorós and his staff do not necessarily know what the squad will face. They can get a little bit of an idea based on the opposition's roster and the first two games, but it will still be challenging. That does not mean excuses can be allowed; the NJ/NY side must earn all three points, especially at home.
One of the biggest issues last year in the regular season that ultimately led to the eighth-place finish was the lack of scoring at times. When Esther González was not hot, the team sometimes struggled to get the goals they needed. That is why it is vital that Gotham starts scoring more, and others on the team must increase their tally. If they want to win more and if they want to turn Sports Illustrated Stadium back into the fortress that it was in 2024, then the goals must arrive.
The good news, though, is that the defense is still strong, and arguably the backline was critical to the 2025 NWSL Championship run. With players like Lilly Reale and Emily Sonnet, and then the return of Tierna Davidson, Gotham FC is in good hands. The ladies should make the first meeting extremely difficult for the Summit.
