Blues closed the gap between themselves and the top six with a critical win at Hillsborough

Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner only needed four words to sum up his feelings after Chris Davies' side recorded a crucial victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

It has certainly been a mixed campaign for Blues upon their return to the Championship, with many expecting Davies' men to mount a sustained bid for the play-off places at worst, with Wagner's millions continuing to bankroll a well-documented rebuilding project.

The 2-0 success in South Yorkshire in midweek was a timely victory for multiple reasons, none more so than the fact it was a first league win away from St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park in three months, having previously emerged victorious at both Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End.

Blues came into the clash with Henrik Pedersen's side in 14th, eight points away from the play-off places, meaning a third victory across four outings in all competitions was critical in order to turn up the heat on the sides above them in what remains an extremely competitive fight for the top six.

After a frustrating performance and result against Swansea City on Saturday, the away support - which was more than 4,000 spectators - were left feeling the same emotions for large parts of the encounter as Wednesday looked to hold Birmingham to a second draw of the season, having recorded a 2-2 draw in the Second City back on September 30th.

However, the in-form Marvin Ducksch put an initial stop to those plans when he diverted Jay Stansfield's wayward-heading effort past Murphy Cooper from close range, before Kyogo Furuhashi finally registered his first league goal for the club, six months after signing from Stade Rennais for £10m.

Wagner, of course, has been extremely vocal regarding developments - both on and off the pitch - in B9 ever since his takeover back in July 2023, and that continued on Wednesday afternoon as he certainly felt energised by the end result in the Steel City.

It has been well-documented that, on occasions, Wagner has been spotted in and amongst the travelling contingent at a handful of Blues' away fixtures since his ownership of the club began - most notably in two 1-1 draws at Wrexham last year.

The recent five-part Amazon Prime docuseries also gave great insight as to how passionately the American feels about succeeding in his aims of making Blues a Premier League club for the first time since 2011, especially after unveiling plans for the new 62,000-seater Powerhouse stadium on November 22nd.

Although it has been a mixed campaign in terms of results and performances, Wagner has also continued to provide the aforementioned Davies with ample backing, despite there being reports of the 40-year-old facing the sack across a couple of sticky periods in the campaign - most recently during a seven-game winless streak between early December and the turn of the New Year.

However, results have since started to turn for the better as far as Blues are concerned, as they have now accumulated seven points from a possible 12 to kickstart 2026 in terms of their Championship campaign.

Knighthead and director of football, Craig Gardner, have also sanctioned the arrivals of four new players into Davies' squad in the form of Kai Wagner, Jhon Solis, Ibrahim Osman and August Priske - with the latter seeing his deal confirmed in the lead-up to the 2-0 result in S6.

Following the customary scenes of the Blues players being serenaded for their efforts and a crucial three points at full-time, Wagner took to his Instagram story to issue the encouraging four-word message of "that's how it's done".

Ahead of the remaining midweek fixtures in the Championship, Blues are now just five points behind Preston in sixth, after the Lilywhites lost 3-0 to Hull City at Deepdale.

Although the overall performance was not the greatest, it is an encouraging sign for Davies and Wagner that the Birmingham players were still able to push themselves to a crucial victory - one which could provide a springboard for momentum between now and May.

After shaking off their recent away woes, it is now back to the sanctuary of St. Andrew's, where Blues have lost just one league game under Davies, as they face off against fellow play-off hopefuls, Stoke City, on Saturday afternoon, as they will hope to right the wrongs of their 1-0 defeat in North Staffordshire back in September.
