Wayne Rooney has given his verdict on whether Frank Lampard should stay at Coventry City following their promotion to the Premier League.

Coventry City are preparing for life back in the Premier League after winning the Championship title.

Coventry led the way at the top of the Championship for much of the first half of the season, but a run of just four wins in 13 games over the winter period saw them knocked off the summit by Middlesbrough in early February.

However, the Sky Blues recovered their form impressively in the latter part of the campaign, and they sealed promotion back to the top flight following a 25-year absence with three games to spare before being crowned champions, eventually ending the season on 95 points.

It seems that the work Coventry manager Frank Lampard has done at the CBS Arena this season has not gone unnoticed, and the 47-year-old is believed to be on Crystal Palace's six-man shortlist of candidates to replace Oliver Glasner, who is leaving Selhurst Park at the end of the season.

The Eagles are not the only Premier League club to have shown interest in Lampard, with Bournemouth said to have considered a move before appointing Marco Rose as Andoni Iraola's replacement, while he has also been linked with former club Chelsea and Fulham.

Amid the growing speculation over Lampard's future, Sky Blues owner Doug King admitted that "everybody is going to get linked with everything", but while he refused to rule out his manager's potential exit this summer, he urged supporters not to worry about "what may or may not happen".

As Lampard's list of suitors continues to increase, his former England team-mate Wayne Rooney has revealed that he would like to see him remain at Coventry this summer, but he conceded that the Sky Blues boss will face a tough decision if he receives an offer from a more established Premier League club.

"The big question now is, does he stay at Coventry if a steady job comes up which could progress his career again?" Rooney said on The Overlap Fan Debate.

"We've seen it with Kieran McKenna when there was talk about him going to Chelsea.

"I think that's a really difficult decision for managers who are getting promoted.

"Do you stay loyal to the club you've got promoted with, knowing that in six months time, if it doesn't go well, you might get sacked?

"I think these are really important decisions for these coaches who get promoted to take.

"I want him to stay at Coventry and try and build.

"That's where you hope the owners give them the time, like Kieran McKenna's had the time to go up, get relegated and go back up again, and hopefully Ipswich will be better for that.

"But we've seen it before with Russell Martin, who did really well, got promoted and then got sacked.

"You just hope there's a bit of loyalty from the manager and the club as well."

Frank Lampard should remain loyal to Coventry City as Crystal Palace circle

It could potentially be a challenging first year back in the Premier League for Coventry next season, so Rooney is right that the chance to take over at a club like Crystal Palace could be tempting for Lampard, particularly if they are in the Europa League.

However, Lampard has rebuilt his managerial reputation at the CBS Arena after damaging spells at Everton and Chelsea in the top flight, and he should remain loyal to the Sky Blues after King took a gamble on him at a time when many other clubs would have been reluctant to give him an opportunity.

Sunderland and Leeds have proven this season that it is not impossible for a newly-promoted club to survive in their first season in the Premier League, and with Coventry possessing an excellent recruitment network, Lampard should be optimistic that his side can defy the odds and avoid relegation.
