Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has fired a clear transfer ultimatum to Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon as the pair continue to be strongly linked with a move to Manchester United.

Newcastle duo on United’s radar

United are readying themselves for another significant summer spending spree, helped by the financial lift that comes with qualifying for the Champions League.

Following Saturday’s 1-0 win over Chelsea, United are bitterly close to booking their spot in the continent’s most prestigious competition. Michael Carrick and his side need just six points from their remaining five matches to mathematically secure qualification.

United look set to reinforce every area of the pitch, from midfield to attack. The left wing, in particular, requires urgent attention and that need will grow even greater should Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both leave as expected.

Gordon is of interest to United, although a recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the England international would much prefer a switch to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Tonali, on the other hand, is a priority target for the Red Devils as they plan for a massive overhaul in the middle of the park. Tonali features highly on a list that also includes Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Aurelien Tchouameni.

As rumours about the Newcastle pair continue to swirl, Howe has drawn a line in the sand, making it clear they must decide if they are “in or out.”

Howe’s ultimatum

A chastening 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday made an already tense atmosphere at St James’ Park even more toxic.

Newcastle have now lost eight of their last 11 Premier League games and currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League table.

While Howe battles to retain his position as questions over his future intensify, he has also not shied away from expressing his views on the speculation surrounding Gordon and Tonali.

The English coach said, “What I will say is that what I see from the players is total commitment. I know the media will have different stories coming out at different times, I think that comes with the territory, as I’ve said many times, with us currently. It’s not something I want or encourage.”

“I want players totally fixed and here emotionally and physically because I think you can’t do both.”

“You’re either in or you’re out, there is no middle ground for me, so if that is the case with one or two players, that would be hugely disappointing, but I can’t give you any firm narrative either way because I’m not involved in those conversations.”

He added, “No-one has said anything contrary to that to me personally.”

United are next in action on Monday when they welcome Brentford to Old Trafford.
