The Premier League may have finished almost three weeks ago, but the drama continued in this week’s international fixtures.
How did the Premier League’s South American stars get on for their national sides?
With the score at 0-0, Manchester United’s new boy Matheus Cunha missed a sitter for Brazil against Paraguay. However, he made up for it as he provided the assist for the only goal of the game, as the five-time world champions secured a 1-0 victory. New United teammate Casemiro was back in the Brazil squad, after an absence of more than a year and a half. He played every minute of Carlo Ancelotti’s first two matches in charge of the national side.
Liverpool’s Alisson and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes also started both matches. Whilst Spurs’ Richarlison and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli both started a game each and featured as substitutes in the other. The four points earned by the Brazilians were enough to book their place at the 2026 World Cup.
Chelsea’s Andrey Santos made his second appearance for the Brazil senior side, more than two years after his first. The 21-year-old was rewarded after an impressive loan spell with Strasbourg in France this season. There was also a start for incoming Chelsea starlet Estevao Willian. The 18-year-old talent will join the Blues after the Club World Cup.
However, another Chelsea star had differing fortunes with his national side. Enzo Fernandez was shown a straight red card as Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw with Colombia. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz scored Colombia’s goal amidst continuing speculation over his future at club level.
Spurs’ Cristian Romero and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez played every minute in both of Argentina’s matches, while Crystal Palace duo Daniel Munoz and Jefferson Lerma started in both games for the Colombians.
After starting every Premier League game this season, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo put another 180 minutes into his legs. He played every minute for Ecuador as they secured a pair of 0-0 draws against Brazil and Peru. Brighton’s Pervis Estupinan joined him on the pitch in both matches. The two points earned for the Ecuadorians confirmed their qualification for next summer’s World Cup.
Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte played every minute for Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay. They suffered a 2-0 defeat to Paraguay, before beating Venezuela by the same scoreline. Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur was absent from the first fixture but he started and provided an assist in Uruguay’s victory.
