Kevin Keegan, the former England international and Hamburger SV icon, has died aged 75.

His family said in a statement that he had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. They thanked his medical team, described him as a much loved husband, father and grandfather, and asked for privacy.

Keegan joined Hamburg in 1977 and helped deliver an unprecedented Bundesliga title in 1978-79. His move from Liverpool shattered the British transfer record at around £500,000 (€589,000).

During three seasons with the Red Shorts, he won the European Footballer of the Year, now the Ballon d'Or, twice.

He came close to guiding Hamburg to their first European Cup, losing the 1980 final to Notts Forest. The club eventually lifted the trophy in 1982-83.

In June, Keegan said he had stage four cancer, six months after his family first disclosed his diagnosis.

Across his career he also played for Scunthorpe United, Liverpool FC, Southampton FC, Newcastle United and Blacktown City.
