Hamburger SV have heroically clawed themselves closer to Bundesliga safety after a 2-1 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt this afternoon. Goals from Albert Grønbæk and Fábio Vieira enabled Merlin Polzin'a side to come from behind and secure the points.
Despite the intimidating Deutsche-Bank Park atmosphere, Hamburger SV settled well as Nico Capaldo forced Michael Zetterer to cut out a dangerous low cross. At the other end, Daniel Heuer-Fernandes was alert to a fierce Can Uzun shot heading for the left corner.
Edging closer to the half-hour with the sides in gridlock, Fábio Vieira imposed himself on the game. The Portuguese midfielder twisted and unleashed a venomous strike -- Zetterer was beaten but the crossbar absorbed the power before bouncing away from danger.
As the clock ticked towards half-time in the Hessen state, Uzun was at the heart of the host's attack once more. The Turkish star's close range effort ultimately met the shin of HSV's shot-stopper, ensuring it would remain a scoreless first-half of action.
The game burst to life inside three minutes of the restart, with Uzun refusing to be denied for a third time. HSV carelessly gave away the ball in their own half, prompting Burkardt to slip in the 20-year-old who plunged it into the lower-left corner with conviction.
However, the lead would last all of three minutes when a HSV cross found Albert Grønbæk at the back post. The Dane netting his first goal, although Skhiri should have kept it out on the goal-line. His work for the afternoon hadn't ended yet either.
Nearing the hour, Grønbæk lifted a ball into the probing Fabio Vieira. Controlling it with his chest created space to snap a shot beyond Zetterer, giving HSV a 2-1 lead. At this point, Albert Riera called upon Kristensen, Bahoya and Chaïbi to try battle back into contention.
The latter almost won his side a penalty when his free-kick struck the arm of Sambi Lokonga only for VAR to wave away appeals. The game would then be stopped for a chunk of minutes when Torunarigha and Knauff clashed heads, resulting in the HSV man being subbed off.
A whopping 10 minutes of injury time were added on by referee Deniz Aytekin. The returning Younes Ebnoutalib came close late on, watching his header get flicked over the bar by Heuer-Fernandes. Ultimately, Kristensen's late sending off would ensure the win for HSV.
