Huddersfield line up major League One shake-up with bold transfer plan

Huddersfield Town are exploring an ambitious move for Preston North End’s Brad Potts, with Bolton Wanderers midfielder George Thomason identified as a potential fallback option.

According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, the Terriers are keen to add another midfield option to Lee Grant’s evolving squad and are prepared to spend to secure the right fit.

Potts, 31, is the preferred target, but with Preston reluctant to sell amid reports of interest in Lilywhites defender Jack Whatmough as well, Town may instead turn their attention to Thomason - a younger, more attainable alternative with proven League One pedigree.

Huddersfield have been active in the transfer market so far this summer after a disappointing first season back in League One, which saw them fall short of competing for promotion. It could be different next time around, however, and there are promising signs with seven additions already through the door in Josh Feeney, Owen Goodman, Marcus Harness, Ryan Ledson, Joe Low, Sean Roughan and Murray Wallace/

Potts has been a key figure for Preston since joining from Barnsley in 2019, valued for his versatility and athleticism across midfield and wing-back roles.

The 31-year-old was a regular under Paul Heckingbottom until a hamstring injury sidelined him in March, and remains under contract at Deepdale, meaning any deal would likely require a significant offer to tempt North End into a sale.

His profile, however, fits the mould of what Huddersfield are looking for - experienced, physically robust, and capable of contributing both in and out of possession.

Should a move for Potts prove unworkable, Town are expected to switch focus to Bolton’s George Thomason.

The 23-year-old has developed into a calm and intelligent presence in midfield since joining the Trotters in 2020 and played a central role in their promotion from League Two.

Thomason signed a long-term contract with Bolton in 2023 amid interest from clubs higher up the pyramid and would likely also command a strong fee.

However, his age and League One consistency make him an appealing option for the Terriers' recruitment team.

Nixon also reports that Huddersfield remain in talks with Preston over a separate deal for centre back Jack Whatmough.

The 28-year-old is seen as a solid addition at the back, with a £250,000 fee mooted and a three-year contract on offer to tempt the defender away from Deepdale.

Huddersfield have already made seven signings this summer and continue to target key areas as they look to assemble a squad capable of challenging for promotion from League One in 2025/26.
