Alfie May has struggled during his debut season at Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town have struggled for both consistency and stability in League One this season, and have an important summer transfer window up ahead.

The Terriers sacked former boss Lee Grant in January following a four-game winless streak, even though they occupied a play-off spot when they dismissed the 43-year-old.

Grant was replaced by Liam Manning, who initially enjoyed successive victories over Bradford City, Luton Town, and Peterborough United, before the Accu Stadium outfit's form took a significant turn for the worse.

Manning was granted compassionate leave by Huddersfield in March, leaving Martin Drury and Jon Stead in interim charge for the remainder of the campaign, and it remains to be seen if he will be back after of the summer window opening.

Huddersfield Town given verdict amid Alfie May struggles

Huddersfield signed striker Alfie May last summer from Birmingham City in a £1.2 million deal to help bolster their chances of sealing promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking.

The former Blues man helped the Midlands outfit win the League One title last season by notching 16 goals and eight assists in 44 third-tier appearances.

However, May's Terriers exploits have been significantly less inspiring, as he has scored just five goals in 32 league outings so far.

Football League World asked our Huddersfield fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, if he thought the ex-Charlton Athletic man could have a better second season in West Yorkshire than his debut campaign, or if the 32-year-old's days at the Accu Stadium are already numbered.

Rayner told FLW: "It's really difficult to know about Alfie May's future. He's 32, he hasn't played enough football for the club this season, for one reason or another.

"He's had suspension issues, a couple of red cards, and also finds himself, it seems, out of favour at the moment. At the weekend, we desperately needed to bring somebody on, and we brought on Dion Charles, who is in woeful form, really, rather than Alfie May.

"That's telling, I think. There seems to be something where either he's not happy at the club, or the club aren't happy with him, I don't know.

"He has played 38 games. However, he has also missed a decent chunk of games. I think he's missed 10 league games, and then been on the bench for a couple, so 12 league games in a campaign where we really needed his goals, or the goals that he, in theory, should have brought.

"He's only scored five goals for us this season, and is that really what we brought him in for? That's not the result we expect. The question is, who's going to take him off our hands?

"He's got a decent contract as I understand it, he'll be on a decent wage for the level that he's at. Who's going to take him off our hands? Who's going to be in charge?

"There's so many unknowns at the moment, we don't know who's going to be picking the team, who's going to be making those decisions. We'll have to see, but five league goals in 25 starts in the league out of 32 league games is not great for a striker."

Alfie May could already seek Huddersfield Town exit

As exclusively revealed by Football League World last summer, Huddersfield agreed a £1.2million deal to sign May from Birmingham, but it really hasn't gone to plan.

That handsome transfer fee is indicative of the fact that May is a seasoned League One goalscorer who has previously excelled in the third tier with Blues, Charlton, and Cheltenham Town.

However, as summarised by Rayner, something has clearly not clicked between the 32-year-old and the Terriers.

Therefore, the former Cheltenham hotshot could be keen to seek an exit this summer, to help reignite his old form in the latter years of his career - there's surely still a chance that May can fire in the goals for someone at third tier level next season, but that may not be with Huddersfield.
