The Terriers could be set to cash in from the sale of a midfielder who spent the 2025-26 season on loan in League Two with Notts County.

Swansea City are set to sign midfielder Tom Iorpenda from Huddersfield Town, which will provide the West Yorkshire club with a handy windfall which might amount to a million pounds when it's all said and done.

Following five years of mid-table mediocrity in the Championship, Swansea's strong start to the season has been something of a surprise.

The Swans are understood to be close to signing midfielder Tom Iorpenda from Huddersfield Town in order to help achieve this, and this transfer is slightly unusual in that Iorpenda didn't play a single minute for the Terriers throughout the 2025-26 season.

Instead, he was on loan at Notts County in League Two, but a strong run of impressive performances in that division have caused Swansea to express an interest which will also be financially beneficial to Huddersfield.

Although Iorpenda was on loan at Notts County last season in League Two, it's been reported on Sunday morning that the midfielder is now set to make a step up to the Championship.

Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports has posted to the social media platform X that Swansea City are set to sign Iorpenda from Huddersfield Town for £750,000, a figure which could amount to £1 million with add-ons, confirming that the transfer has already "been agreed by the clubs".

There's also a sign that Huddersfield believe that Iorpenda could go on to still better things, with Joseph reporting that the Terriers have also negotiated a sell-on clause for the midfielder.

Iorpenda is understood to be having a medical at Swansea on Sunday, ahead of getting the deal agreed and confirmed before the end of this summer's transfer window.

He had been on the radar of Derby County earlier in the summer, but Swansea is now the next destination for the youngster.

The loan of Tom Iorpenda to Notts County might be considered a lesson in how the loan market is supposed to work to the benefit of young players.

Iorpenda was originally a product of the youth academy at Brighton & Hove Albion, but moved to Huddersfield Town in 2021, agreeing his first senior professional contract with them a year later. Following a loan spell in the non-league game with Hyde United, he made his league debut for the Terriers as a second-half substitute against Plymouth Argyle in January 2024.

But it was his move to League Two for the 2025-26 season with Notts County that really caught the eye. Iorpenda had a spectacularly successful season at Meadow Lane. He was ever-present in Notts' 46 League matches, and when they finished in fifth place in the division he also appeared in all three of their play-off matches, which, following a narrow 1-0 aggregate win against Chesterfield in the semi-finals, ended at Wembley with a 3-0 win against Salford City to seal promotion.

Last season wasn't only a success for his team. It was also hugely successful for Iorpenda on a personal level. He ended the season as their Players' Player of the Season and their Fans' Player of the Season, and even managed to scoop the award for their Goal of the Season.

The player's return to the Accu Stadium and interest over the summer from Championship clubs demonstrates the extent to which a player can benefit from a successful loan. As a League One club, Huddersfield have evidently decided that they can't stand in the way of an ambitious young player with offers from a higher division, and a £1 million windfall will come in very handy for them.

And in return, Swansea City get a talented young midfielder to bolster their ranks following a strong start to the season which hints that they could be set to make a concerted bid to return to the Premier League at the end of this season.

Tom Iorpenda will have dreamt of playing Premier League football while he was in the Brighton academy. That dream didn't work out for him at the Amex, but his subsequent moves to Huddersfield and then to Notts County have given him the opportunity to prove his potential, and he's now set to be one step closer to realising that dream.
