It was revealed earlier in July that League One promotion hopefuls Huddersfield were keeping tabs on Trotters skipper Thomason, as a fall-back option in case a move for Preston North End's Brad Potts failed.

It now seems like the 24-year-old has become the main target for the Terriers, as Alan Nixon reported via his Patreon Page on Sunday that the Yorkshire-based club are now ready to start the bidding to try and prize away Steven Schumacher's skipper.

The box-to-box midfielder has worked his way into the Trotters' first-team over the years, making well over 150 appearances for the club following his move from non-league Longridge Town, and was rewarded with the captain's armband last season just a month and a half into the campaign by Ian Evatt, who decided to demote Ricardo Santos.

However, his debut season as skipper didn't go as planned, after long-serving manager Evatt left the club, and was replaced by Schumacher, who couldn't repair the damage that was done by results from earlier in the season.

After the conclusion of the campaign, Thomason has been linked with a summer switch to League One rivals Huddersfield, as a backup option if they failed to get the aforementioned Potts from Preston to move to the John Smith's Stadium.

The Terriers have now made the 24-year-old a top target, and are reportedly set to open the bidding at £750,000. But, it's expected that Wanderers will be wanting a more cash than Town's expected first offer.

Two years ago, Bolton accepted a £1 million offer from Bristol City for Thomason's services, but he decided to snub a move to Ashton Gate in favour of remaining at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

George Thomason could be a long-term leader for Huddersfield Town if they can get a deal done

As per the report from Nixon, rookie head coach Lee Grant is keen to add anotehr leader to their dressing room, and Thomason certainly fits that bill, having been the captain of an enormous club like Bolton at such a young age.

The midfielder has had mixed reviews from Wanderers supporters, after struggling with inconsistent performances last season, which ultimately played their part in Bolton's failure to make the top six.

However, there is certainly a more than competent midfielder in Thomason, as proven by his wealth of experience at the top of League One already, and the leadership qualities he displayed to land the gig as captain.

Whilst Huddersfield will be wary of the price tag their third-tier rivals put on the 24-year-old, the signing would be an excellent pickup for the Yorkshire side, as he could serve as that long-term leader that Grant wants, and grow with the squad thanks to his age.
