Huddersfield Town are looking to sign another striker this summer

Huddersfield Town are targeting a return to the Championship this season at the third attempt after two underwhelming campaigns in League One have seen the Terriers finish outside of the play-off positions.

The Yorkshire club struggled for stability last term as summer appointment Lee Grant was sacked in January and replaced by former Norwich City and Bristol City manager Liam Manning. However, Manning left a few months later on compassionate leave.

Huddersfield subsequently appointed Martin Drury, initially on a caretaker basis before handing the 40-year-old the job on a permanent basis.

A successful summer transfer window will be vital for the Terriers if they are to achieve their goal of promotion back to the Championship, and reports have emerged that they may have a striker on their radar.

Huddersfield have already signed one striker this summer, securing the signature of Ashley Fletcher from League One rivals Blackpool, but have sanctioned a loan exit for Alfie May to join former club Doncaster Rovers.

The latest rumour involving the Terriers involves Dundalk striker Gbemi Arubi, with the Irish Sun reporting that Huddersfield, as well as League One rivals Burton Albion, are looking to sign the Ireland Under-21 international.

After stints with Shelbourne and Waterford, Arubi signed for Dundalk in 2025 and scored 12 times as they were promoted back to Ireland's Premier Division, and he's hit six goals at that level in his 20 appearances so far in 2026.

Who is Huddersfield Town's newest transfer target Gbemi Arubi?

Arubi, aged 22, is currently playing his trade at Dundalk and has been suggested as the breakout player of the season in the League of Ireland, with former Ireland winger Daryl Horgan suggesting that his teammate "can play like Harry Kane".

“He’s getting all the plaudits, and rightly so," Horgan said on Arubi earlier this month. "He’s been absolutely top drawer.

“It took a bit of time last year to get going but, once he did, he was borderline unstoppable in the First Division. And then it’s a huge jump but he’s been fantastic.

“He can play a bit like Harry Kane, he’s kind of got a bit of everything really. He can occupy a back four on his own. He can run channels. He can hold the ball up. He can drop in and link it. He’s got great feet.

“He’s really pushing himself on this year. The ceiling is so high for him if he keeps going. I’m sure there will be plenty of clubs coming in for him sooner or later.”

The 22-year-old won the First Division title with Dundalk last season and has registered six goals and three assists in 20 appearances in the Irish top-flight this campaign.

That has seen Arubi awarded with a call up to Ireland's Under-21s, along with being subject to League One interest.

However, Dundalk manager Ciarán Kilduff has reinforced that there have been no firm offers as yet and the Irish side are keen to keep their striker until the end of the League of Ireland season, which concludes in early November.

Asked if he was in danger of losing Arubi this summer, Kilduff said: "There’s no reason to think that. I’m not stupid, he’s attracted a lot of interest.

“I’d be lying to say there’s anything close. There’s interest, but as far as I’m aware, there’s no deals, no offers, there’s nothing substantial, but what a player.”
