Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points after beating Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
Cody Gakpo scored in the first half and Mohamed Salah added another in the second via penalty as the Reds picked up all three points against their fiercest rival.
Liverpool were in rampant mood in the first half and created a barrage of attacks, and the scoreline could have easily been different had they taken their chances.
Virgil van Dijk, the Reds skipper, was outstanding once again, and he has been heavily praised by football pundits for his commanding display at the back.
Troy Deeney hailed him as “solid” and “brilliant” and added that it was a “masterclass” display from the Dutch defender, as he picked him in his team of the week.
He wrote: “Composed, solid and brilliant – Van Dijk produced another masterclass as Liverpool registered their sixth clean sheet of the season. He’s a huge part of the reason they have only conceded eight league goals so far.”
Van Dijk is widely seen as one of the best defenders in the world, and he has been in terrific form this season.
He had headed against the post in the first half and failed to keep another on target.
Van Dijk didn’t allow Erling Haaland to dominate, and alongside Joe Gomez, who was equally brilliant, he ensured Liverpool kept yet another clean sheet.
In the second half, he nearly gifted away a goal after making a sloppy error just outside the box, but Caoimhin Kelleher showed a great presence of mind to rush out of his position and prevent the danger.
The Dutchman made seven clearances, blocked two shots, made three interceptions, won six duels, and only lost possession four times during the game, which shows what a quality player he is.
Liverpool will face Newcastle United on Wednesday in their next Premier League game at St James’ Park.
