It has been reported that Swansea City, Queens Park Rangers and an unnamed club have agreed a deal with Peterborough United for Kwame Poku.
Swansea City have joined the race to sign Kwame Poku this summer, and they have agreed a deal with Peterborough United over his signing alongside QPR.
The Ghana international winger, who has been arguably the star man in League One for the last couple of seasons, is departing London Road this summer at the end of his contract, but Peterborough are entitled to a compensation package.
Earlier on in the summer, it appeared as though Birmingham City were leading the chase to sign him, with Football League World exclusively revealing that the Blues were ready to offer him a wage of £30,000 per week.
However, they haven’t got a deal over the line and Posh’s Director of Football Barry Fry has previously claimed that as many as 26 clubs have registered their interest in the 23-year-old Croydon-born attacker.
Links with Rangers have emerged in the last week or so, but it has now been suggested that Swansea are among those leading the race to sign the former Colchester United man.
According to Mark McAdam, Swansea City are one of three clubs to have agreed a deal with Peterborough United for Poku. McAdam also says that Queens Park Rangers and an as yet other unnamed club have also agreed deals with Posh. The decision now rests with the player where he will be playing his football in 2025/26.
Swansea hadn’t yet been credibly linked with a move for the Ghanaian, so their sudden leap to having agreed a deal is somewhat of a surprise. It was claimed earlier today that it was QPR who had hijacked the deal for Poku moving to Scottish Premiership side, Rangers, so this latest news is a real twist as a decision nears for the departing Peterborough man.
Darragh MacAnthony has recently stated that Peterborough will still get “millions and millions” for Poku in compensation, despite the fact his contract is due to end next week.
MacAnthony was also recently critical of Ricky-Jade Jones for opting to move to Bundesliga side St Pauli on a free transfer, rather than move domestically.
After an impressive end to the season following the sacking of Luke Williams, previously interim boss Alan Sheehan was given the Swansea job on a permanent basis at the start of the summer.
Their business began quickly after the end of the campaign with the arrival of Zeidane Inoussa for a fee believed to be in the region of £5.1 million from Swedish outfit Hacken.
As well as Inoussa, Swansea have also brought in three defenders, with Bobby Wales joining from Kilmarnock for an undisclosed fee, whilst both Cameron Burgess and Ricardo Santos have joined from Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers on free transfers, respectively.
Poku, who began his career in non-league with Cray Wanderers and then Worthing, missed a massive chunk of last season due to injury but was still named Peterborough’s Players’ Player of the Season as well as getting into the EFL League One Team of the Season, helping Posh become the first team to ever successfully defend the EFL Trophy, too.
Should Swansea manage to get a deal over the line for Poku, it would be a real statement of intent and backing of Sheehan, as they seek to sustain a promotion challenge next season.
