Los Angeles FC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (39) would be open to a shock return for France as Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus No. 3 goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup, according to L’Equipe. Lloris announced his international retirement in the aftermath of France’s defeat to Argentina on penalties in the 2022 World Cup final. The former Spurs goalkeeper later explained his decision by the fact he felt exhausted. Now, Lloris looks back to his best with LAFC, with whom he secured eight clean sheets in his last nine games.

L’Equipe goes as far as saying that the opportunity of playing one final tournament for France and giving a hand to Les Bleus‘ next crop of talented players would appeal to Lloris and, should Deschamps were to ask him to come out of his international retirmement, he would accept to act as France’s No. 3 goalkeeper.

France’s goalkeeper situation remains fluid with Milan’s Mike Maignan being the undisputed No. 1. Rennes’ Brice Samba is currently his understudy, but the third goalkeeper is a conundrum in itself. Lucas Chevalier’s confidence appears shot, and he is not given any playing time at PSG for months now. West Ham’s Alphonse Areola is also confined to the bench recently.

Given the circumstances, it would make sense for Deschamps to, at least, consider a recall for Lloris, who is also now very familiar with the conditions France will get accustomed to come June in the United States. Didier Deschamps will announce his World Cup squad in three weeks.
