Hull City secured their return to the Premier League after winning the Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough.
However, that achievement comes with a downside, with BBC reporting that the Tigers could be handed a point deduction for financial infringements.
Hull are expected to pocket a staggering £200 million after securing promotion through the play-offs.
The Tigers are still in a precarious position, needing to raise money through player sales before the end of June to avoid falling foul of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Promotion bonuses written into player contracts have pushed the club’s finances beyond the permitted limit, leaving Hull facing a potential points deduction before they have even kicked a ball in the Premier League.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire explained that Hull’s financial losses have generally been under control in recent years, aided by profitable transfers, including the sales of Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves.
The problem is that promotion bonuses count towards PSR calculations. While these payments are a reward for success on the pitch, they can also have serious consequences off it.
Hull owner Acun Ilicali has openly acknowledged the challenge. Speaking earlier this month, he admitted the club had overspent and would need to sell players.
“We have overspent, and we have to sell some players before 1 July,” Ilicali said. “I’m not afraid. We have managed harder things. For us, this is more manageable.
“Now we are a Premier League team, the values [of players] has raised up which is a good advantage.”
While Ilicali’s confidence is reassuring, publicly revealing the urgency of the issue may weaken Hull’s position in transfer negotiations, as rival clubs know they are under pressure to complete deals quickly.
The club would prefer not to lose key members of the squad that secured promotion. They’re expected to explore sales involving players who are not part of their Premier League plans.
Under the current PSR framework, clubs that exceed the £39m loss limit incur points deductions proportional to the overspend. Hull’s estimated breach could result in a six-point penalty.
