The Championship's pair of punished sides both want the 21-year-old.

Hull City are hopeful that they can seal a deal for Manchester United midfield target Toby Collyer ahead of this weekend.

The two Championship teams who currently have fee restrictions imposed on them - Hull and Sheffield Wednesday - are battling to try and sign the Man United youngster.

And while Wednesday have accepted their fate when it comes to transfers, the Tigers are awaiting the result of their appeal of the punishment from the EFL.

Even with the restrictions that are currently imposed on them, Hull have had a much busier summer window in terms of incomings than the Owls. Should Collyer end up at the MKM Stadium, he would be Sergej Jakirovic's 10th signing of the transfer window.

According to Hull Live, the Tigers are "quietly confident" that they are in pole position to complete a temporary move for the 21-year-old ahead of Henrik Pedersen's Wednesday, with the hope being that they can strike a deal before this weekend's match against Oxford United.

Adding a holding midfielder has been a priority for City of late, and they have been in talks with Collyer for a number of weeks, as per Hull Live.

They would need EFL approval before agreeing any deal with the Red Devils for their prospect, as would be the case with David Akintola and another product of Carrington, Brandon Williams, who Hull are also trying to sign.

Collyer has half-a-dozen Premier League appearances to his name, plus a couple of starting features in the Europa League. Any move away from Old Trafford would be the first of his career.

Wednesday have Collyer's Man United youth team colleague Harry Amass on their wishlist too, as per The Star. Their thin squad needs adding to ahead of a gruelling season; a task that'll be much tougher with their fee restrictions.

The combination of Nathaniel Chalobah's injury and the lack of left-footers at the club make Collyer and Amass two obvious targets for Wednesday to go after to add more balance to an incredibly thin squad.

Hull must make sure they beat Sheffield Wednesday to Toby Collyer

It would be a real psychological blow to the Tigers if they were to miss out on Collyer to Wednesday, given the poor state that the club is in.

As things stand, it's hard to see how the Owls will manage to survive this season without a takeover happening. That's certainly not the case for Hull, even with the current fee restrictions imposed upon them.

The 21-year-old would fill a position in the squad that needs addressing - one which has been vacated by Steven Alzate following his move to Atlanta United.

His wages are unlikely to be astronomical given his age and the percentage of them that Hull would have to cover. They simply have to be the ones to win this race.
