Hull City Should Do Everything They Can to Sign Striker That Rejected Leeds United | OneFootball

Hull City should make Bamba Dieng one of their priority targets this summer. The Senegal international is available on a free transfer, and players with his age, pace and scoring record are rarely available without a fee.

Hull and Wrexham have reportedly joined the race for the former Lorient striker, while Middlesbrough, Nice, Al-Shabab and Amedspor have also been linked. Valencia and Real Betis have tracked him too, so Hull will need to move quickly if they believe he can lead their attack.

Dieng Could Be Excellent Value

A free transfer would still require a large financial commitment. Dieng is likely to demand a significant salary, signing fee and agent payment because several clubs are interested.

Even so, that package could represent better value than spending millions on a less proven Championship striker. Dieng is only 26 and has experience in Ligue 1, European football and major international tournaments.

Hull cannot offer the same profile as some of the top-flight clubs in the race. They can offer him regular starts, an important role and the chance to become the focal point of an ambitious Championship side.

His Scoring Numbers Are Impressive

Dieng scored 10 goals in 22 league appearances last season, despite starting only 15 matches and averaging 55 minutes per game. He scored once every 122 minutes and converted 22 per cent of his shots.

He also finished the season with 10 goals from 8.81 expected goals. That suggests he made the most of the opportunities he received rather than simply benefiting from a high number of chances.

His percentile numbers are particularly encouraging. Dieng ranked in the 94.7th percentile for non-penalty goals, the 86.2nd percentile for non-penalty expected goals and the 81.2nd percentile for conversion.

All 10 of his league goals came from inside the penalty area. Hull would therefore be signing a striker who attacks central spaces and can finish crosses, cutbacks and passes behind the defence.

Dieng’s physical qualities would add another dimension to Hull’s attack. His recorded top speed of 33.8 kilometres per hour shows that he can threaten teams in transition and force defenders to turn towards their own goal.

He also averaged 14.8 sprints per 90 minutes and performed strongly in the air. That combination would allow Hull to use him both as an outlet for direct passes and as a runner behind defensive lines.

Dieng is not a forward who will dominate games through creativity. His passing and assist numbers are modest, so Hull would need to use him primarily as a goalscorer rather than a playmaker.

The Leeds Rejection Should Not Matter

Dieng is remembered in England for rejecting a move to Leeds United in 2022. Leeds appeared to have agreed a deal with Marseille before the striker chose to pursue a move to Nice instead.

That transfer later collapsed following his medical, but Hull should not judge him on a dramatic deadline day from four years ago. He is now older, more experienced and coming off a productive season in France.

The incident does show that Hull will need to present a convincing project. Dieng will have several offers, so the club cannot afford to approach negotiations slowly or treat him as one option among many.

Hull City Should Make Their Move

Dieng’s selection in Senegal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup further strengthens his reputation. He remains part of a strong international group and has experience competing at the highest level.

There are risks because he has never played in the Premier League and could demand one of the biggest contracts in the Hull squad. However, the potential reward is significant.

Hull may struggle to find another striker with Dieng’s pace, age and scoring record without paying a major transfer fee. They should do everything within reason to convince him that the MKM Stadium is the right place for the next stage of his career.
