Hull City take interest in rising German attacking talent Mert Kömür (21) | OneFootball

Kicker is currently confirming a Sky Germany report regarding Hull City interest in Augsburg attacker Mert Kömür. The 21-year-old – presently valued at €12m in the latest Transfermarkt listings – had been attracting plenty of interest from the Turkish Süper Lig, as well as Belgium. Courting from a Premier League club may nevertheless dramatically alter the Germany U21s summer transfer saga. 

Kicker does note that concrete talks have not taken place yet.

Kömür – despite his young age – brings with him the experience of 52 Bundesliga appearances. Last season, he scored two goals and added five assists in 28 German top flight deployments, 18 of which were starts. Kömür’s production numbers leveled off during the second half of the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, cooling interest from abroad heading into the summer. 

Who is Mert Kömür?

Kömür is a Dachau native who has been working within the Augsburg system since joining the club in 2019. The versatile attacker progressed through the FCA ranks before making his Bundesliga breakthrough under former head coach Enrico Maaßen.

His first Bundesliga goal came against Bayer Leverkusen on the final matchday of the 2023/24 campaign. Kömür subsequently continued his rise under Jess Thorup, working his way into Augsburg’s senior rotation during the following season.

The young attacker truly began attracting greater attention during the spring of 2025. Kömür scored the winning goal against Bochum and became the first Augsburg teenager to reach three Bundesliga goals. Thorup subsequently described him as a “top footballer” with strong technical qualities and an ability to score goals.

That Bochum winner left Kömür in line for another Bundesliga start and helped convince Augsburg to tie down one of their most promising academy products.

Kömür signed a new contract through 2029 in July 2025. Augsburg managing director Michael Ströll praised the youngster’s commitment and hard work, while Kömür spoke of fulfilling his childhood dream of playing in the Bundesliga.

Kömür’s exact position nevertheless remains difficult to define. He possesses the technical attributes of a No. 10, but can also operate as a right-sided attacker, second striker or advanced central midfielder.

His comfort drifting into the half-spaces allows him to receive the ball between the lines, combine quickly with teammates and attack the penalty area from deeper positions. 

Sandro Wagner even used Kömür as Augsburg’s lead striker during the opening stages of the 2025/26 campaign. Kömür scored against Bayern Munich while spearheading the FCA attack, though a broken toe interrupted his strong start and forced him to withdraw from his first Germany U21 camp.

The centre-forward experiment did demonstrate Kömür’s tactical intelligence, movement and ability to finish. It also occasionally left him carrying too much responsibility in a position that did not necessarily maximize his creative strengths.

Kömür is not a conventional No. 9 capable of consistently occupying two central defenders. He works best when afforded the freedom to move between the second and third attacking axes, drop away from the front line and link play before making delayed runs toward goal.

His friendship with fellow Augsburg academy product Noahkai Banks also emerged as a memorable feature of the 2025/26 campaign. Banks and Kömür both scored in an Augsburg victory over Wolfsburg, prompting Wagner to describe Kömür as one of the most talented players he had ever coached.

Kömür’s progression at Germany U21 level has supplied further evidence of his versatility. The attacker identified Florian Wirtz as his footballing idol while discussing his ambitions of eventually making the leap from Antonio Di Salvo’s U21 side to Julian Nagelsmann’s senior national team.

His style contains some discernible Wirtz influences. Kömür is comfortable receiving possession in congested central areas, turning quickly and searching for combinations rather than relying solely on pace or individual dribbling.

Get German Football News’ November Germany U21 tactical review praised Kömür’s work opposite Aljoscha Kemlein on the second attacking axis. Even during a difficult spell at club level, Kömür remained effective when surrounded by technically gifted players and relieved of the burden of leading the attack alone.

His development naturally attracted transfer interest. Beşiktaş submitted an initial €10m offer in January before raising their bid to €12m. Augsburg ultimately retained Kömür as they considered whether the financial return justified losing one of their best homegrown attackers.

Hull City’s interest now presents a different opportunity. A move to England could grant Kömür greater exposure and a fresh tactical environment, but Augsburg remain under no immediate contractual pressure to sell.
